Suggestions for a good codec pack
« on: September 19, 2006, 11:41:27 AM »
I just redid my machine of 5 years with a new install of Windows.. (I mean the other was five years old).  I could play most about anything on the old install but I've been out of the game for a while and I was wondering what is the new best codec pack?  Any help be appreciated.

What are your specs?
Are you looking to play Divx and all of it's hacks or just mainstream stuff?
I ask because a lot of download packs of codecs can kill your computer.

An AMD Thunderbird 750 that thinks its an 850, slot style, with 4** something memory and a GeForce 2 Ti.  I use to have a much better setup but I bought all premium parts and it died within 6 months.

I just use ffdshow:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow

It doesn't cover everything, but it has no playback issues in the numerous codecs it does support and those that aren't covered are extremely rare (I have only encountered one or two files that it couldn't play, both of which were in odd formats).

Work is still going on, just not as high-profile as in the past.

ffdshow I don't think will do everything...you may need AC3Filter, Gabest's VSFilter for subtitles, etc. etc. I'm pretty sure this stuff is all included in the old GKnot Codec pack, though it's a bit outdated.
