Primal Doubts
« on: July 08, 2006, 04:21:13 PM »
I've been a devout Nintendo fan since the NES, gray Zapper and all...and, for the first time, I'm questioning whether or not I'm going to purchase a new Nintendo console.  When I first heard that Nintendo was gracefully bowing out of the graphics arms race, I assumed it was an act of submission.  It's taken a while, but I feel that I understand Nintendo's strategy of taking the industry initiative via innovation rather than needlessly opulent tech.  It came upon me, though, that since the Wii is such an ideal medium for FPS games, it might very well devolve into an extremely FPS-centric console.  Sadly, I don't like FPS games...not even Metroid Prime.  Would it be wise for someone that's not a fan of the FPS genera to purchase a Wii?

In short, yes.

To begin with, Nintendo doesn't really do FPS'. Just look at Zelda TP at launch, and Mario within 6 months. Also, I seriously don't think that the Wiimote is good ONLY for FPS'. The Wii, in fact, should be anticipated as the home for a wondrous variety of games, from new quirks like Atlus' Trauma Center games, to Nintendo's come-on-you-saw-this-coming Mario party series, to third party action titles (that may be multiplatform) made new and improved like Rayman: Raving Rabids (or the first DBZ game ever I'm actually contemplating buying), to niche titles like horse racing simulators (Final Furlong) or train simulators (Densha go go?), and of course simply new and out there stuff like Cooking Mama (Wii).

Simply peruse the list of titles announced for Wii and you'll see that they cover a range of genres... in which FPS' are actually strangely UNDERrepresented.

The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

Although the Wii will be better at FPS than other consoles ( and even that is debatable),  I don't think it will be as good as a keyboard and mouse shooter on the PC.

Anyway... attracting more of one genre to a console will help increase the user base of other genres.

a keyboard and a mouse is better than actually firing a gun from a first person perspective in real life.

The WiiMote is better for simulating a gun, and in that way, is superior to the mouse.

But a mouse is better for navigation, since it can be repositioned simply by lifting it off the table.    The wiimote acts more like an analog stick with a large dead zone and no auto-centering.

Overall, I think the benefits of the mouse in comparison to the WiiMote outweight the negatives.  But I haven't tried it myself.
