This thread will now segue into a discussion about Dragon Quest Swords.

Will it be real time sword = controller movement? Or predetermined commands like Red Steel?

I have yet to see how the remote is supposedly great for sword fighting. Sword fighting isn't that great to begin with, specially in first person.

Not gestured based.  Why you ask?

Because the game it was based off was only sort of gestured base.  Though from the screen it looks like you just are making lines on the screen you don't actually see the weapon just glowing lines.  So I really don't see any reason no to make it map 1 to 1.  Of course their will be gestures for spells.

I don't think DQ:S will make the launch window.

Well when I was in fencing in college, I certainly did all of mine from a third person view.  It made it much, much easier that way.

Third person does my head in for anything requiring any precision - it's a whole extra matrix transform that you have to do in your head in order to figure out where you should be aiming. Yuck! 3rd person view racing games in particular get on my nads - they're more interested in showing you the shiny car you're driving than giving you good view of the road ahead (why waste pixels on bits of road IVE ALREADY DRIVEN OVER already???)

I've got no problem with third person driving as long as the camera isn't delayed. If the camera's delayed (i.e. doesn't permanently face the exact same direction as your car) I switch to first person or abandon the game if that's not possible.

KDR:  That is funny.  I can't play First Person Perspective Driving games, because its hard to feel the Length and Width of the car in that perspective.  The Sense of Speed is better, but it is so much more difficult to drive.  When in a third person game I always know how close my car is to other cars and where it is on the road.

Yes, it's easier to feel the dimensions in third person but to me it's more important to feel where I'm going and since most games use delayed cameras in third person view that means playing in first person. I just tend to drive like a drunkard if the camera doesn't point where I'm going since I use the camera's orientation as my orientation and steer appropriately.

I'm on Spak-Spang's side here.  On top of knowing where my vehicle is compared to the other cars in third person, I find that many first-person views don't give an accurate feel for being in the car...it's more like I'm tied to the grille.

It's a matter o' taste I guess.  I think first-person sword fighting could be great if it's designed properly.  Even if it's gesture-based instead of 1:1, the trick is to make it more complex.  Red Steel may be better than we think, I think we've been seeing the same couple of level 1 sword fights, I'm hopeful that as the game progresses, it will be like DK Jungle Beat or the Punch-Out games, where you have to block several attacks and look for just the right opening to counter.

I also doubt that Dragon Quest will make launch, especially in North America.  I hope it does well, though.
That's my opinion, not yours.

oops, I meant third person.

As I said before unless you are a master sword fighter, professional in fencing, the battles would SUCK, we need to be cheated into believing we are good, one on one mapping will never do that.

Or they could just require average weapon skills and teach you those throughout the game with an option to increase the difficulty to swordmaster levels.
