Dora the Exlporer
« on: April 14, 2006, 10:48:48 AM »
So I was watching Dora the Explorer today and it made think of the Revolution. She was out hunting for Easter eggs, and she asks into the "camera" do you see an egg? and of course its totally obvious to the person watching it that the egg was barely hidden in some grass out of her view. Then this blue arrow comes out of nowhere and points to the egg, like the child, or in my case adult watching it points to the egg.

Here's my point: with things like Tivo and the Revolution, how far off is interactive "live" t.v, imagine that same scenario in Dora, except with a Rev like remote, the child points at the egg, if they point to the wrong spot, they get that dun! noise u get with Tivo when you press something unapplicable at the time, the screen pauses until they click correctly on the egg, that where the Tivo aspect comes in. While the child is still trying to point at the egg, the show might continue, but to keep it continuous tivo would start recording from the point so that whenever the child is ready the story picks up wherever they left off, and they're off to hunt for more eggs. You could also do something with swiper, and like having to catch him or something. This would work for other shows as well, like sesame street, like find the blue A and other shows like that. Of course when this is created it'll probably be porn that brings it mainstream like the VCR.
Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

Mountain...Lake...CONEY ISLAND!

...*ahem*....

But back on topic, I wonder whether edutainment will EVER become something more than an ill-advised venture in the industry. It seems like such a great idea, but has fallen on its face so many times sometimes I wonder if its become taboo. *sigh*

See, this is why MaryJane is my favorite new poster (new meaning new since forum registration was fixed).  For those keeping score, capamerica is second.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

You know...a brilliant person would take the animation from Dora and create Dora Revolution games doing exactly what you said...it would be simple to produce and create...and kids would love it.

heh, I'mas good as it gets... or something like that. I believe Dora first started off as a click adventure online at nick jrs. website so that may be where it get's it's resemblence with the arrow and clicking sounds on TV. as I recall the game was inplace before Dora aired. coincedence? maybe, but I'm not sure

Has anyone ever seen a child actually try to interact with these shows?  I never have.  They watch just as passively as if Spongebob was on.  Even if they were fooled initially, it would only take one instance of not answering quickly enough to reveal the show's fraud.

Actually, I did once see my youngest niece playing along with a lot of encouragement from my mother.  That just proves that TV is no substitute for actual involvement with your kids, I think.

However, if I may bring this back around, I think the format of shows such as Dora the Explorer may one day be ideal for educational software.  The revolution controller may do a great deal to make that possible, but I think it will also take some very good voice recognition tuned for squeaky little voices to really work.   I don't think that pausing the show until the kids actually answer is going to be good enough to engage them.

I don't understand
You said that when they don't answer quickly enough they quickly understand the fraud of the show
Then, pausing the show isn't engaging enough.
So what is the solution?

Interactivity is the key.  Software would be able to wait without simply pausing the video.  It could offer additional hints and encouragement based on hesitation or wrong answers, too.

Reminds me of one of the new Billy & Mandy episodes: Pandora's Lunch Box.  I knew Dora was evil...

Hey Dora is funny, she's no sponge bob though. Spongebob Squarepants mixes in a whole lot of adult humor that goes right over a childs head into the show, and sometimes its obvious like when spongebob patrick and mr. krabs(how funny is that name), go on a panty raid and end up stealing mr. krabs moms panties.

I still think interactive t.v using a device that combines the functionality of the Revolution with Tivo isnt too far off.
