Im not entirely sure, but Disney grabbed most Ghibli films for US distribution, including Totoro, and they havent released it in any form. Being the legal distributors, no one else is allowed to release Totoro, and thats why its so hard to find it over there. Luckily, Grave of the Fireflies wasnt include in that deal and is easier to find.

Ghibli films that I haven't seen (but that I'm aware of):
Porco Rosso
Grave of the Fireflies
The Cat Returns

I've seen all the rest, of those I'm aware of, and my friends owns all three of those, so I'll see them before too long

Actually, Disney owns the worldwide distribution rights to nearly all of the Miyazaki films (except the ones which  Discotek is releasing). They even release the region 2 discs in Japan now. The only exception is that Toho handels theatrical distribution within Japan. There is also some trouble in regards to "Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro", which had the US rights bought prior to the agreement and will likely revert to Disney when the current rights to the title are up.

As for Totoro, Fox released a pan & scan dubbed version awhile back, which I have and would suggest against buying. Disney is going to release their own version, correct aspect ratio and with the Japanese audio track, on March 7th and I would suggest waiting for that one. "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Whisper of the Heart" will also be released in region 1 on that same day:

NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind (1984) and Castle in the Sky (1986) will be playing on TCM tonight starting at 8. Watch it, or else.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Lawrence of Arabia
Doctor Zhivago
Star Wars (Original Trilogy)
LoTR
Raiders of the Lost Ark

...That's all I can come up with right now.

I remember when mods locked threads like this.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Yeah, this kind of thread usually doesn't end well.  It looks like there is a start to a Studio Ghibli discussion, so please feel free to create a new thread for that.  What we don't need is six pages of people listing movies.
