hooray?

It's for the PS2. Coming in 2006.

Why PS2? And not, you, DS?  Apart from that - good news, I guess.

Good move Sega... what with the hot sales of Killer 7 on the PS2 (what's it up to, about 1500 copies?) we can see how eager the PS2 market is for non-mainstream games that aren't afraid to try something new.

Why not DS?  Because it would have to face off against a more popular voice-controlled pet simulator...

Except, acording to corporate logic, if a game on x system of y genre is popular, then the immediate response should be to develop 5000 new games of y genre for system x.

Great games do not equal sh!tty sales, true. But if it were on the cube, how much better do you think that it would have sold?

"Yeah, no way innovative games have a chance on the PS2 I mean, look at how badly Katamari Damacy bombed!"

Katamari managed to get a ridiculous amount of hype and turned into something incredibly hip, cool, and fun to play.  It succeeded for the same reason GTA succeeds, basically.  It's cool to play it (among gamers, GTA is a more universal "cool").
Not to say it isn't innovative.  But it's innovation isn't the key to its success.  And this may very well bomb.

Let's see... Third party game with niche appeal? 15 thousand copies and that's optimistic.

Didn't Sammy already buy out Sega?  It didn't seem to end the rediculous decisions.

Like Super Monkey Ball!  Oh wait...

Pretty much every "niche" game like Killer7, Monkey Ball, or Viewtiful Joe has sold more on the GC than on the PS2...

Of all the franchises for Sega to resurrect this is certainly an odd choice.  The time to have released this was around 2002.  The Dreamcast had died, the new console were in, and there was still enough buzz for the Dreamcast's greatest hits so they could have ported the original or made a new game then and then attract people who had heard of the game but didn't buy a Dreamcast.  Back then Seaman for the Dreamcast was still in stores.  It was still current at the time.

The PS2 is also an odd choice, not because of stuff like Killer 7 bombing but because the PS2 is being replaced next year.  With the X360 launching this year and PS3 hype being built up a sequel to a cult game is not going to get noticed.  It would make more sense to release this early on on the PS3.  At that point the console is new and people are looking for games to play.  As a launch title for one of the new consoles Seaman would get a lot of attention that it otherwise wouldn't.  It's like Super Monkey Ball.  Do you think that game would been nearly as popular as it was if it wasn't a Cube launch title?  Seaman needs to be a big fish in a small pond.

In theory this would work on the DS but you have to remember that the DS is a cartridge system.  Seaman would actually talk back to you (I think anyway, I read a review for it years ago) and that wouldn't work as well on a cartridge system.

Katamari Damacy...while it's true that innovative games released on both GameCube and PS2 usually sell better on GameCube, I'm sure there are successful, innovative games on the PS2.  The problem is the system is so flooded with games that fewer of these "sleeper" games stand a chance of becoming hits.  Once one does, though...chances are it will not sell better on Cube.  I don't know what Katamari's sales were on PS2, but I doubt that it would have sold more than 250,000 copies on the GameCube, and that's assuming it would get a lot of coverage from the media, especially Nintendo Power.

Seaman...I've always been interested in this game, it's one more point for PS2 if I ever go out to buy another console.  I agree PS3 would be smarter, maybe Sega thinks PS3 will be too expensive!
That's my opinion, not yours.
