Smashing Drive GBA Footage

This 3D engine must been seen to be believed.

When Italian developer Raylight Studios first showed us their BlueRoses 3D engine for Game Boy Advance, we were highly impressed but wanted to see it running on a real game and not just tech demos.  The engine would go on to be used in Wing Commander Prophecy and Ozzy and Drix.  Raylight granted us a peek at their next title with a lengthy gameplay video of their new game, Smashing Drive for GBA.

The game employs Raylight's engine to generate a complex polygonal city running at a surprisingly brisk pace.  Some of our readers may remember Smashing Drive as an arcade and console game set up like a futuristic version of Crazy Taxi.  You can glide off ramps, smash other cars that get in your way, and drive straight up buildings.  All of these features are included in the GBA version, too.  Download it below!

Raylight Studios is also a licensed developer for Nintendo DS.  Their first DS project will be announced soon.

This is really impressive for a GBA game but damn that is one of the cheesiest things Ive ever seen.  Everything from the song to the exagerated colors.... this game looks so damn funny I just might pick it up even though by the time it comes out Ill be in portable 3D heavan with the DS.

I think the original game was pretty cheesy, too.

To me it seems like a waste to use such an impressive engine on freaking Smashing Drive.  I've never heard anything positive about that game so why release it on the GBA where it will likely be even worse due to hardware restrictions?  I'm of the idea that if you release a game that everyone thinks sucks and is universally hated by critics (average score on GameRankings is 43.8% and the Xbox version's score is in the 30s) that you just sort of forget the game ever existed and never speak of it again.  This looks like your standard con job that Acclaim was always famous for.  Use amazing graphics to sell a crap game and thus "con" people into buying it.

Regretably, I played the original arcade game once (Gameworks unlimited play night, so I don't feel too bad....).  This is NOTHING like Crazy Taxi.  At the start of a level, some schumck gets in your cab during an in-game cut sequence.  You're like totally on rails the whole time.  Way lame....
