According to Totalvideogames.com Nintendo just registered a bunch of names (abbreviations) and all appear to be GB related.

Which one do you think will end up being the final name for the DS or do you think it is completely unrelated to the DS.

When were these names registered?  If it's a while ago they could be for the GBA or the SP.  It's also possible these could be just-in-case names for future Gameboys.  If these are possible names for the DS I think it's fair to say that this third pillar talk is nonsense since "GB" likely stands for Gameboy and if Nintendo uses the Gameboy name for this that means it's the successor to the GBA.

From the article - The following titles were registered by Nintendo on March 19th 2004, whilst we’ve seen several reports suggesting that one of these will likely form the final name of the Nintendo DS, we have our doubts as Nintendo have been adamant that the format isn’t to do with the GameBoy family in the past – as you’ll notice all the titles feature GB.

The registrations of these acronyms was indeed recent...and Im following the idea that its referring to different technology other than the (currently known as) DS.
The GameBoy Next....thats a fine possiblity...

I bet they're just all types of acronyms Nintendo may want to use in the future (probably all/mostly for Gameboys, given the all the "GB"s in there).
One of these could be the name for the DS, after all Nintendo doesn't have to stick to it's "third pillar" plan if it doesn't want to.  However, I think Nintendo really believes in the third pillar (even though it seems a bit silly), and I think it will give the DS a brand-new name.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I remember when IGN discovered that Nintendo had registered the name "StarCube", and everyone thought that the new console´s name would be that. It eventually came to be "GameCube". Wonder if Nintendo got annoyed over the early exposure, and changed the name!

The official story according to Gamespot is that they have not decided on a name yet and that this may not be related. They also said that you can fix the problem of having to hold an N-Gage sideways to speak with a powerdrill. Strange that. It's also the remedy to PSPs being so irritating!
