New Forum Poll - Please Participate!
« on: June 08, 2004, 11:47:06 AM »
I know we haven't used the poll feature very much in the past, but I'm going to try it again to gather some feedback, and I may use it more frequently if things go well this time around.  Here's a handy link to the new poll about movie downloads on PGC:

My personal opinion on the movies is this...

I can go other places for the trailers and there really is no need for you guys to kill your servers with them.  It would be cool if you just linked over to like, gametrailers.com because that is all they do, so imo they aren't really a direct competitor of you.

The movies that are really cool are the more personal ones, or ones that are like soooo new you guys get them out first.  I really like what Game Informer did this past e3 with their videos of the nintendo rep demoing the DS.  I think that was by far the best video coverage of the show.

I dunno, just my two cents.

I agree.  And the screw attack video didn't work on my computer anyway.  No video, just sound.  Probably missing some .dll crap.

I like to see videos, but I could find them somewhere else, too, if I needed to.

I went with the "I think PGC should focus on other kinds of content and forget about movies" option. But I'm on dial-up, and downloading any movie takes me years, so my vote might be kinda crap.

I come here for the original content, if you have some movies I can't grab off of someone else's server to use their bandwidth, then I will get them.  If PGC had some sort of funny or interesting use for them that wasn't available anywhere else, I am all over it.  But more e3 videos or some such, eh in my book.

I like the movies, I've downloaded a lot of them and enjoy them. I find the quality to be less than perfect, however. Have you considered encoding them into more than one format?

Well, you can't really compare PGC's complementary videos with Gamespot's pay service.

lol, why is it that more sites go the IGN pay for my crude route?

There's not much incentive for me, and I don't really buy the excuse that they needed to keep their site running. They are paid journalist ( not sure how much )

But ontop of that, they have ads, popups and whatnots out of the yin yang, Plus insider. They have to make profit somewhere, I think it's an excuse to use as a crutch.

Last I check the internet ads have gone up in marketing.

Bah, I will personally feel that PGC is best fitted. Since there's more integerty and no whinning about going muilti-platform coverage and getting paid for it *cough*N-Philes*cough*

I feel better now

the movies are fine.  My only beef with them is the fact that i download at ~20k/sec.  I'm spoiled though because I download from IGN at ~200k/sec.  So i voted the too slow option.

I'm somewhere between 1 and 2, there are very few movies I download from here, but they work.

I've thus far downloaded the ToS intro and the Screw Attacks videos, but the sound worked on neither. Go figure. I'm still glad I got to see the screw attack though.

All the videos work perfectly for me, but the only things that grabbed my attention were the DS videos and ZELDA trailer. I liked the press conference audio and video game tracks you put out every now and then. I wouldn't mind seeing videos of stuff that happens behind the scenes of PGC however. But I'm thankful for everything, cause it's always free

I couldn't view it either. Only Quicktime and mpeg videos are viewable on my comp. Oh well. I guess that leaves more surprise for later.

When I encode movies myself, I use DivX...if you can't view those correctly, you need to get or update your DivX codec.  At least in the past, I've had trouble even then, but if you get the DivX Player and use that to open .AVI files, they'll work no matter what.  If you can get DivX files to play in Windows Media or whatever, even better.

When you see movies in other formats on PGC (like the WMV of Rainbow Six 3 that I posted today), that's in the format in which it was provided.  I don't have the video editing know-how to decode such files and recode them in DivX...and I don't think the video quality would be very good, either.  So if you're annoyed that we keep offering videos in different formats, that's simply because we get them in different formats.  As I said earlier, any video that I'm encoding myself will be in DivX.  It's pretty much the best quality for the best file size.

I know that I would rather see more news, more editorials, and more mailbag, more interviews, and orginal planetgamecube greatness, etc.  I agree with the other comment above about getting our video fix from somewhere else like gametrailers.com or other sites.  Do what you do now and do it well, don't try to be everything.  I would rather continue to come here and get my nintendo news, and if I want to see some video I will go somewhere else.  Keep up the good work.

I thought the whole point of the mov, rm and wmv formats was not letting the user convert them into open formats?

For WMV, that's definitely true, especially with that new per-movie licensing/certification BS.  But the MOV container has been around for a long time, traditionally used in video editing on Mac platforms.

Collectively, they're meant for aweful "STREAMING CONTENT!!" whose aim is to convince you to sign up for some "better" service so you can eventually get the "high quality versions"; or simply convince you that the streaming quality is bad because your connection sucks (a dial-up user) which prompts you to subcribe to some kind of broadband service when -- surprise -- the streaming quality was just BAD to begin with.  YU'VE BEEN DA FOOLED! Yeah, they are meant to keep you from re-encoding or changing formats but there are usually ways around that. For those of you having problems with watching these videos or only getting half the streams (just getting video or audio but not both) I would suggest the k-lite codec pack at k-litecodecpack.com .  I use their codec packs and have yet to find a video I couldn't watch with these codecs and Media Player Classic (another must-have imho). However, if you don't have a Windows machine... I don't really know where you can get codecs other than at their respective sites (e.g. divx.com).

Oh yeah, and just so this post stays on-topic, I voted that the vids are nice but I haven't d/led any yet. Mostly because I haven't seen anything I wanted to d/l yet (not horribly interested in the screw attack and I saw the zelda promo elsewhere).
