You gotta go to Nintendo's site and buy component cables. I need to get around to doing that myself...

To run in 16x9, the game has to support it (like F-Zero GX and Soul Calibur II).  There should be an option somewhere to change it.

If a game doesn't support 16x9 then (it depends on how good your TV is but) you can probably stretch and/or zoom in on the picture so that it takes up most of the screen.  Alternatively, you could have an unstretched picture with black bars on the left and right side of the screen. That's how I prefer to play it - I don't like to stretch the image or zoom in so that I miss something on the top or botom of the screen.

What does the widescreen function do, render the image in 16:9 aspect ratio at 4:3 res so you can stretch it? Or does it merely add black bars?

I already ordered the component cable from nintendos website but they are on backorder till april 26.  anyway, for the games that support progressive scan, will they automatically load up in progressive scan or do I have to do something besides have my component cables hooked up?

I'm not sure because i don't own the cables, but i remember reading that you have to hold the B button as the Gamecube is starting up to make it run in progressive scan.
Hope that helps.
