wiimote on PS3?
« on: December 06, 2006, 06:59:32 AM »
I just read that the newest PS3 update (v.1.30) allows for a bluetooth remote control. I wonder how long it will take for somebody to hack the PS3 into allowing the Wiimote to be use on it.  They've already done it for PC.

Well, this didn't take long to make. >_>

Screw off, Sony. Always copying off of Nintendo (even though that's what Nintendo wants)

Blah reading that article was no surprise.  In all honest how long did everyone expect until Sony pulled something like this?  Sixaxis was the first sign.  Though if it is ever released, its only an add-on, and we all know how well "add-ons" do.

Wait, I'm a little perplexed. How is Sony putting a patten on a device Nintendo has a patten on? I may just not know what I'm talking about.

Nintendo has a patent on the gyroscope technology.  I do not think this is the technology specifically being used in the wiimote but I could be wrong.  I do not think Nintendo could patent "motion sensor" since PC controllers have had it (to a degree), along with the Sixaxis.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

The nunchuck is technically an add-on, and it's done pretty damn well, same with the component cables.

I guess your right, but you also do get one packaged in.

The nunchuck is not an addon.  The key with addons is that they are optional or they have their own specialized selection of compatable games. Like the eyetoy for ps2/3.  You can only use it with like what 5 games? The nunchuck is just a detached analog stick with a couple buttons. It's like how in some games for say N64, you use the d-pad for some games and not for others.  At least half the games will make use of the nunchuk.  Which is really annoying because I still can't find a second one grr....

(I also can't get a second Nunchuk, so I had to return Red Steel without at least experiencing multiplayer...and I still haven't been able to beat up my brother in Wii Sports: Boxing.  >_< )

But no, the Nunchuk is packed in.  Calling that an additional peripheral would be like calling additional Wii Remotes or additional standard controllers for any console "add-ons".

Unless they start packaging a new wave of PS3s with their PS3 remote, it's likely not going to be that great.  And with all the attention the Wii is getting specifically because of the control, it will be seen as a more obvious rip-off than Sony's previous ones.

Hopefully people know what they want from their games, and if they want to wave a remote around, they would've already invested in a Wii.

I think a lot more than half will require the nunchuck.  Even Wii Sports, Rayman and Wario Ware require it.  Racing games and maybe Wii Play are the only ones that don't require it so far.  Well, that and some VC games.

I don't see Sony copying Nintendo as a big threat this generation.  Wii is in a totally different class and it already has mindshare (and a bit of marketshare) among non-gamers.  If Sony jumps on this immediately, then Nintendo still has a huge price difference and the arguably superior virtual console in its favour.  Not to mention the Wii Channel interface and it's upcoming (hurry up, Nintendo!) features which I feel are very focused on non-gamers.  Last but not least, it's cheaper to develop for, and that's not going to change unless Sony severely relaxes the requirements for PS3 games.

If Sony doesn't jump on this immediately, (like within 6-8 months) then Wii will already have a superior lineup of games as well as a big reputation for offering those types of games - on top of all the other advantages I just listed.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Considering the fact that the games for the ps3 have hardly even been able to use the tilt function yet if this was released yesterday it would probably be a year and a half before anything actually used it.

No, they could implement motion control in games before then.

Except they'll be hastily slapped onto existing games and appear shoddy and put the Wii in an even better light.

If Sony's likely going to do down, maybe they just want to appear like they're trying to stay afloat.  Even if they are copying Nintendo again.
