We bought Gamecube for my 7 y.o, and I am wondering about the memory. Is it necessary to buy the official nintendo memory card, or do the others work just as well?

There are reliability issuses with any 3rd party cards for any system. I would get the 251 Card from Nintendo.

Definitely do not bother getting a third party memory card just because it's cheaper in price. Along with the lower price comes lower quality. Stick with Nintendo. They only make the 251 now so I highly suggest you get that.
