no disc error
« on: July 22, 2003, 07:00:38 AM »
i have one of the 1st batches of cubes and today  it  stopped working on me.

seems it no longer spins the disc,  instead it just clicks and nothing spins at all.

i have read stories in the past on here where people had  great luck with nintendo replacing or fixing their product. so what i need to know is a # to call  so i can get this started.

guess i'll be stuck playing just the GBA and Xbox in the meantime.

strangest thing is now i have tried it a few more times and  it started working again?
then it stopped, then it started. i can only assume this is a sign of it going out completely in the near future.

thanks for any responses and similar stories and the results of that situation with yourself.

Call NOA...Just go to www.nintendo.com and you should be able to find the number somewhere.
Plus, I think this topic would be more suited for the tech discussion.

Holy crap dude. Same EXACT thing happened to me. I take perfect care of my Gamecube and about a week after the warrenty expired it no longer read any games. About a month later I decided to call them and tell about this (I had already had my SP repaired). They extended the warrenty, picked up the GCN via Fed Ex, couldn't repair it and gave me a new GCN in 3 days. All this happened without spending a penny. But, yes, to get numbers, you can check on the back of your products to for the repair number.

Mine started doing it too.  First time I just rebooted the machine and it worked.  The unit ran for a few hours with no problems.  Then it did it again last night.  I got online and was looking for ideas about what it could be.  Walked back in and it wored fine.  Tonight it won't load anything.  Tried several games.

Nintendo wants to charge $80 to fix it because my unit is over a year old.  That's down right wrong to charge half the cost of the unit to fix it.  I've probably only used it about 5 times a month if you average it out over the 18 months I've owned it.  It's not been abused by any means.  I tried being nice, it was hard to be nice when the talking head tells me that I should clean all 12 discs that I tried because they all might be dirty!    I'm usually calm and cool and can get what I want by being nice to the support guys.  This guy was just being and ass.  When I politely asked if this was a common probelm I was told.  "less than 1% of units have any kind of problem like that".  I told him to forget it, I'd just buy a PS2 or Xbox if I was going to pay that much.

Guess I'll crack the sucker open and take a look since my warrenty is gone.

My experience with my GBA was exactly just like that.  Nintendo is great with customer service.
Both $ony & now M$ appear to have been "using" the gaming industry to finance and prop-up their other industries which would struggle as stand-alone.

My mario sunshine game stopped reading recently. It's not a problem with the cube it's just that the game got too dirty I think. I cleaned it a whole bunch of times and it worked for a while but then stopped working completely. I'm pissed about it but what can I do. This is why cartridges were so great, those things last forever no matter what you do to them. Somebody needs to come up with a way to make cd's more durable cause this stuff is weak. I even tried cleaning it with some eye-glass cleaning solution, good thing my other games still work heheh.
