Finally beat Super Mario Bros. 2
« on: May 18, 2016, 09:30:35 PM »
Mario Maker made me want to play smb2 again. I never beat it back in the day because it's one of the harder Mario games and Steve Fritz stole it. Luckily Virtual console has a great version of it.

my only complaint is SMB2's controls are not as tight as SMB1 or SMB3. The next challenge is to beat it without warping. Or the lost levels. So my list of Mario games to beat is: Mario Lost Levels, Super Mario World 2, Mario Galaxy 2. I've never played any Mario land, I've never beaten any New Super Mario Bros games.

I found the game was basically designed with Luigi in mind since his better jumping makes it a lot more manageable, unlike Mario who has to be pixel perfect way too many times which made the game more frustrating to play as him.  When playing as Luigi I actually prefer this game to SMB1 and the USA version of SMB2.

Wait so your talking about Lost Levels? I just beat SMB2 USA. I haven't tried Lost Levels with Luigi yet. I'm a quarter through Lost levels right now. Controls are also wonkier than SMB1/SMB3. The run has some weird charging. It loses momentum faster than on 3 and 1 and this is odd. On SMB2 USA I used all Luigi and Peach depending on the level. I used the warps so I didn't need Toad for anything. If I had to fight the second Tryclyde I'd probably use Toad because his speedy lifting ability. I'm using the save feature on the Wii U emulator. I used to play smb2 all the time on a computer emulator, but I always found the controls were not good enough.

I always liked that game, but I agree that the controls are loose for a Mario game.  Being the floaty princess made it so much easier that it almost felt like cheating.

That reminds me that I still haven't played the second quest of Zelda.  Without using a guide, it would be fun to find my way through it.

Princess Peach is the easiest in SMB2, although I think Toad was my favorite because of his speed. Luigi was too loosey-goosey but good for high jumps. Mario was the lukewarm solution in the middle.

As a kid I always played as the Princess because of her floating ability made the need for precision jumping less necessary. Nowadays, I play as all four when I do a repeat play-through.

The game was designed with none of the Mario characters in mind...

Did you know that Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) is based off a game called Doki Doki Panic?

Opps, I thought you were talking about Lost Levels.  When I read the last part about beating it without warping, I thought you were talking about how in Lost Levels, if you beat all 8 worlds without warping you'll get the special 9th World, and thought that's what your next goal was so I assumed the topic was about the Japanese version of SMB2.

Oh well, I'd recommend that as your next challenge after you're done with Bros 2 USA then.  ;D

I beat it for the first time on SNES playing All-Stars. Technically I have never beaten the 8-Bit NES version. NES games were just too hard for me most of the time.

When I first started visiting game sites like this one on the Internet, I was surprised to find out that people consider SMB2 to be one of the toughest games on NES. Myself, I've never found it to be a difficult game and it didn't take me very many tries before beating it my first time, and then it became one of my fave NES games to play because of the four different characters and the fact I didn't find it as tough as many NES games. Even SMB1 I had more trouble with than SMB2. Not that I'd call it an easy game, but there are plenty of other games on NES that gave me more trouble.
