3DSXL repair worth it at this point?
« on: January 07, 2015, 09:43:54 PM »
So as you can see, my XL hinge kind of has an issue.

I started an online repair request and they're quoting $135 ($125 for out of warranty repair, $10 for return shipping)+tax for the issue. I don't think I can pull off the "Do you know who I am" card, so that's out (especially since it was bought on Link Between Worlds launch day, so I'd be out of warranty).

The plan was to trade the XL for a New 3DS of some sort, but I'm not sure if they (EB) will take it with this issue.

Should I use it for now and take my chances, or try to get what I can for it now and pick up a refurb/cheap used one to tide me over until the New 3DS hits?

You could always sell it privately through ebay/craigslist/locally at a fair discount and use that money to fund the N3DS.

I suspect the N3DS will release in the West Feb/March because we have two of the announced N3DS enhanced games releasing in this window (Majora, Monster Hunter).

If that's the Zelda edition then I would think it'd be worth some money even with issues. I have no idea if GameStop would pay, but I'm sure someone would buy it.

As long as it still turns on and plays, I'd recommend just dealing with it until New 3DS launches especially since you'd be able to transfer all your data and whatnot then you can worry about what to do with it. When my L button jammed a little over a year ago, I called Nintendo and I got the repair whittled down after the rep looked up my Club Nintendo account.

I doubt EB Games will accept that for a trade as the damage is pretty egregious even if it still functions. You might be able to sell it on eBay. People will buy damaged hardware for parts. Someone might be buy it anyway.

My old DS lite had it's hinge crack as well (although it cracked on the inside of the system) but it was a year before that damage started to make an impact on it's functionallity.

If you can live with not trading it in i'd recommend keeping it. Maybe fix it down the line.

If you have the piece then go to Lowe's (or whatever you have nearby) and get some Loctite Epoxy Plastic Bonder and use that on it, you'll be fine and it will most likely never break. That's an expensive repair, but considering the difficulty and the risk of breaking the top LCD, it's not the worst price you'll find. However, if you can find, say, a 3DS XL with a damaged lower screen or even a bad motherboard, that's a relatively easy fix (just swap your board into the other system). I'd be happy to do it for you if you can find a system like that.

Sent my 3DSXL in for repair just before Christmas... but after balking at the initial cost on the phone, they looked up my account and offered a significant discount, so it was only about $45 for repair+shipping.

Frankly, I wouldn't have paid more than $50 to get mine repaired because I'm hoping to upgrade to a New 3DSXL when that system gets released, and paying to maintain old hardware feels counterproductive.

Be a man and just use your 2DS in the meantime till you can get a N3DS.  Maybe try the Brandogg Repair.  I can't see the picture but if it is one of the collector editions some people may bay it with the damage anyways.

...

3DSXL returned today, but was sent back "as is".  That's pretty confusing to me because I was very clear about the status of everything on the phone and the customer service rep was very clear that it would all be fixed.

Not particularly pleased, but still not willing to pay significant money to fix this unit with New 3DS on the horizon.
