GC and Logitech Z-680's
« on: June 28, 2003, 01:51:55 AM »
Anyone have these and know how to hook them up?
I'm guessing a dual female rca to rca to receive the red and white analog, then a minijack to RCA male.
If theres a better way or if anyone has any advice it would be very appreciated.
And if I do get the RCA to mini do I plug it in the green jack in the rear or the input in front?  I have no idea how to get the PLII but I do know that these speakers can decode it.

Thanks for any help in advance.

According to Logitech's website, that's exactly how you need to hook it up, and it sounds like you'll need to use the "analog" input, which I think will be the one in front, I'm not entirely sure.

I've already read all the logitech documentation and stuff and it plugging it into the analog jack (which is in the back) only allows for 2.1 stereo sound.  The analog jack in the back is like a normal green computer jack and only supports the front right and front left speakers.

I found a faq on Dolby's site http://www.dolby.com/games/nintendo.gc.faq.html and it seems like you can have more than two speakers operating.  From the sounds of things in this article, I think there can be more speakers, but I have no clue how.  But I may be wrong.  If it's truly only 2.1 DPLII then it kind of sucks :-/  Wish I had an Xbox optical connection or something hehe.  Well, thanks for the reply and if anyone still knows more I'd be more than happy to read it :-D

The whole point of DPLII is to provide 5.1 via analog connections.  If you're only getting 2.1, then the DPLII "support" on the Z-680 is a lie -- but truth (and even gear.ign.com's review) says DPLII 5.1 support really is there.  If the audio source (like the game system) doesn't support DPLII, then it's reasonable to have only 2.1; but activating DPLII on the Z-680 would work its magic and utilize the other speakers to produce 5.1.

Get the Cube connected to the analog jack on the Z-680, play a DPLII game, and you're all set.

Make sure you press the "Mode" button until DPLII is turned on.  I know for a fact that you can get Pro Logic II sound from the analog input, because I just went to CompUSA and tested it.

Also, it's not going to do you any good unless you turn on the "Surround" sound mode in your games.  Not all of them have DPLII sound, and none of them have it enabled by default.

Hmm... ok thanks for your help guys.  I'll try it as soon as I get those cables/adapters bought.  How would I say....enable it on Zelda or MP?  I know that on the Z-680s you have to put it on PLII Movie Mode.

OK, while the Z-680's set to PLII Movie Mode, have the game (zelda/metroid) loaded up.  While you're in the game world (not the main menu) press Start and find the Options menu, and adjust the audio settings.  You'll usually find a set of choices like Mono / Stereo / Surround, or Mono / Stereo / DPLII.  Other games have their audio options accessible only from their main menu (example, Burnout 2).

One exception would be Star Wars: Rogue Leader, where its "Stereo" option counts for both Stereo and DPLII mode.
