Topic: Wii Black Screen of "Death"

Hey guess what, the black screen happened to me today, just as I predicted before entering the Shop Channel for the sake of prompting my long-disconnected Wii to reconnect to WFC services (before jumping onto Mario Kart).  The electro-handshake was in limbo for a bit, so I powered down, restarted, went back to the Shop Channel, and it tried to black-screen me again but it didn't last long this time and the Shop loading screen came about fine.

Ok, sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I've just recently encountered an issue with my Wii, which frankly has been off (on on the "red light" due to a power outage) for perhaps a year or more.

Given that it's been off, I expected it to still work when powering it on the other day, but instead got the "black screen of death".

I got inpatient and tried to just reboot the system by holding down the power button.  That would often at least cancel whatever background calculation the system was trying to do.  However, it's been minutes now and no signs of life... Is this pause really proportionate to the amount of time the system is off... should I just come back in a month?  Has anyone figured out a good way of working around this issue?

My Wii stopped working with my component cable recently.

Maybe that's it?

Brandogg: That doesn't salvage my Virtual Console Games or Saved Games (especially noting those saves they didn't let you copy off to an SD card).

Contacted Nintendo.  It's $85+tax to repair a Wii.  My solution was to try and salvage VC games to the Wii U

nickmitch: Thanks for the thought.  I do use component cables.  I tried switching back to regular composite cables after digging them out, but still no dice.  Perhaps I'll crack the Wii open and check it out at some point.

It's a cold solder joint under the GPU like the Xbox 360 or PS3 with the RRoD/YLoD repsectively (most of the time).
