there should be some quality mods released when the game is released too, cause that was a big selling point for Half Life, i know alot of people who got it to play counter strike (me being one of them). so thats a smart move buy valve/sierra.

Half-Life 2 for Xbox

Release date is still TBA for the Xbox, but rumor has it that it will be winter 2003.... initial impressions are fabulous.

You did buy half-life for the mods. The game itself seemed nothing special, but th mods made all the difference. The screen shots look ok, nothing special

When HL was released, I thought it was increadible, but the mods really were the life blood of the game.  Can't wait to see the mods that come out of HL2.

Half-Life was an awesome game, although I never beat it... its graphics are terrible, but the game is fun anyway.  The first parts of the game absolutely freaked me out.  Later on, though, it just felt more like a normal FPS.  I hope the next game does more cool stuff with realistic settings like offices... it just made everything seem more creepy than when you were just in a factory or a Doom-like dungeon or something.

BTW, if you haven't played this game, it's a very different kind of FPS.  There are aliens, sure, and it seems similar... but right from the very beginning, it has a very different feel to it.  Everything is realistic as you hear boring safety protocol and walk through a normal office building in Black Mesa... then everything changes, and the entire office is filled with a sense of danger and tenseness that even Eternal Darkness can't match.  The game becomes a struggle for survival more than a shooter, and the game is really more about trying to escape and find the next cool place than shooting tons of things everywhere (there often isn't that much to shoot).

Not that golf game again. Half life was about the same as Perfect dark in terms of immersion. But being a PC game it is far more continous as in there are no set levels giving it an edge on imersion. But Perfect Dark has more varity in missions than HL. Of course Hl wins at the end of the day because of it's amzing mods. head to head without mods, PD cleans the floor with HL.

Halflife actually won GOTY based on it's SP, while the mods didn't flow in until after.

For example, TFC wasn't included until the GOTY edition, and CS was never included until the plantium.

Why was HL so freaking great was the "world", friendly and enemy AI, enemy skelton structure.

As for dates, HL was released in 1998 (fall) and the graphics were top notch for the time and if you want to compare a game of the similar timeline--play SIN.

Half-Life and Perfect Dark are totally different games.  PD is more of a shooter whereas Half-Life is more of an adventure.  PD is all about getting head shots and objectives, but Half-Life is about surviving and getting to the next area.  That said, they're both awesome games.

Ymeegod: HLs graphics were below average upon release. Before it was released everyone screamed "awesome! those graphics!" but it was soon overshadowed by the likes of Unreal. Some people say HL had the best particle system at that time, but Turok easily wins that category.

It's funny hearing a lot of the conjecture about HL2 on the Xbox.  I've heard rumors saying "Oh yeah, there'll be support for mods on Xbox Live, and lots of downloadable content from other users!"

When you also hear stuff regarding other games not ported to Xbox stating "We didn't want to port this online game because of Microsoft's strict control of Xbox live, where everything needs to be approved by Microsoft before it's available for downloadable content on Xbox Live."

I agree that the game was good in Story Mode, but the thing that kept it alive in online playing was the extreme number of mods available.  I mean, it bred 2 essentially new games using the same engine and simply using mods on the main game, not to mention the countless more amateur mods that made it online.  The mods were out almost as soon as the game was released, and although were more basic than the mods that eventually came out, they really gave people more reason to play online instead of some other game.

So I really don't see how it's going to be that different on Xbox Live compared to, well, any other FPS on Xbox Live right now.  You can't really have a mod community on Xbox Live, as you can't transfer content between users and you can't load up your own server or upload modded content for online play without Microsoft OK'ing it (which you know they won't do unless it's from the developer).  Everyone who wants to play HL2 will get it for PC, instead of for the console, as they know they'll end up with a lot more content to download AND won't have to pay to play.
