Has anyone done an SD Card roundup?
« on: June 03, 2012, 09:57:18 AM »
It wasn't a big deal on the e-shop, where the file size limit probably mitigated any chance of long loads times...
... but starting August, we're gonna see full 3DS titles hit the e-shop. Whatmore, the Rayman Legends demo has given us our first solid hit (AFAIK, I haven't really downloaded many demos for the 3DS) of SD-card-based loading time.
So that said, has anyone tried doing a break down of loading times across multiple SD card types? I mean, we have quite a solid range to compare, from cheap Class-4 to solid Class-10 all the way to monstrous UHS-I/UHS-II cards. It would be interesting to see if the higher-speed cards result in any noticeable benefit in 3DS demos, as it would more than likely result in better performance when full retail games hit the e-shop.
And hey, anything that might speed up load times in a (hopeful) eventual release of DOA:D is okay in my book. =3

I replaced my stock card with a SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I rated for 95MB/s and saw little to no difference on the 3DS. The 3DS must be the bottleneck since it was faster on my PC.

I've heard the 3DS is bottlenecked w/r/t speed.  I was researching it to determine if I wanted to spend the extra to get a higher-speed card or not.  Decided it wasn't worth it.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

Well...Hmm...I sure splurged on that 16gb class 10 for nothing.  Granted, it was like a $5 price difference at the time, but still...that could have bought a GBC game (if there were more than 4 GBC games to buy....)

Oh yeah, I know I have 2 sealed copies of that game.   1 is for trading.  But people who collect Amiibos?  They really have a problem!

I just got a MicroSDXC 64GB card and am happy to report that it does work in the 3DS (after I formatted as FAT32 in my phone). That's nearly half a million blocks of space, and it bodes well for Wii U storage capability.

I just looked around, and the ones I saw were 70-80 bucks. For 3DS it might be worth is for some people eventually; for Wii U you'd get much better value going the USB route.

Yes, insanolord is correct, but I managed to get a UHS-I rated card for that price. Of course, you wouldn't need to use a Micro card in the Wii U, and regular SD cards are cheaper.

Yeah, I looked at standard SD as well and the one I saw was about $50.
