Software support wanes for GameCube
« on: May 16, 2003, 06:09:49 AM »
Over on CNet they have an article about how the Cube is slowing down.

http://news.com.com/2100-1043_3-1003661.html?tag=lh

Did Activision even make a game for the Cube?  How can games be selling low if they don't make good games, or even let people know they exist.  I do not understand this.  Someone out there is trying to kill Nintendo, maybe to get the games on their system.  EA did this to the Dreamcast.

Companies are focusing on XBox and PS/2.  I can see the PS/2, but XBox?  They are number 3 worldwide and not that far ahead in USA.

FUD sucks folks!

Some encouraging news from EA:
"They're really reaching out, for a change," Brown said. "Our developers have had more conversations with Nintendo in the last two months than they probably did in the two years before that." and "Hardware is in their DNA," he said. "I think these guys have a really good chance to become the big come-from-behind story we all talk about at the end of the year."

Activision has several games coming to GameCube, but they simply were not shown at E3 due to the lack of space.  We were disappointed that we couldn't see the games ourselves, but they ARE coming.

For what it's worth, software support isn't really "waning".  I think what we're seeing is companies that would normally release sub-par games just to recoup their development costs are realizing that we're not going to buy their crap any more.

That's the first time I've seen that quote from EA. It's nice for a change for a publisher/developer to actually acknowledge that Nintendo has been and still is a capable company. Definately a change from all of these "analysts" predicting Nintendo going 3rd party if they don't come up with their own X-box Live clone or having Miyamoto work on the GTA killer. And it's EA to my amazement.

Yeah, I'm REALLY going to miss those Vivendi Universal titles.  The Gamecube is doing much better than the N64 was at this same point in its lifecycle.  Hey, Electronic Arts is still making games for it so things can't be all bad, right?

It's too bad that Gamecube has to wage such an uphill battle against public perception.  I think if you match up the Gamecube library vs. the X-Box library you'll find that Gamecube has so many more "AAA" titles that it's not even funny.  To this day the only reason I'd buy an X-Box is to play Halo (and that's just not enough).

I was very pleased to hear those quotes from EA also.  If you look at the software library of the GameCube versus the XBox, there really is no comparison.  Halo is good from what people say, but that is only one game.  There are a dozen or more great GameCube games.   I really do not understand all of this negative stuff about the Cube.  Maybe I am a biased Nintendo fan, but honestly they have the best games.  They should be in second place by a wide margin.

It is just amazing how things are going.  I am very happy that Nintendo is talking to 3rd parties more now.  Use the 3rd parties to fill in between 1st party releases, and have them make games Nintendo wont/cant.

Things are not as bad as the press is making them out to be.

From the way mainstream media depicts Nintendo you'd think they're about to go out of business, yet they're financially healthier than Microsoft's entertainment division.  In fact you can't even compare the two.  It's not like they're posting losses.

I think the reason why Nintendo gets such bad press is because people realize their potential.  There's no reason why they shouldn't be on top of the industry, and yet they're stuck in the number three slot.  It's like in sports, when a number-one-seed team gets upset by a number-eight-seed team in the first round of the playoffs - the number-one team gets double the negative backlash from the press because expectations were so high.

It's pretty obvious that the press is judging Nintendo with a different set of criteria vis-a-vis Microsoft.

They are in second place. They have Xbox beat by 1.3 million units world wide.

Nintendo is the bast. Halo was a great game, but M$ hasnt put out anything else worth mentioning.

Yeah, Nintendo is the bast.  One might even say they're the bastest.

I'm sure if you talk to Microsoft they'll say they're in the number two slot as well.

MS once said something along the lines of "we are clearly in a number two position in the industry" which is what caused so many people to conclude it was beating Nintendo in hardware sales but the wording was so vague it should have been obvious to everyone that wasn't the case.

PIAC: Well, yes, but without Japan the currently top three selling titles (DoA3, DoA:XBV, MGS2:S)* would be nonexistant!
