A Tower Toppler Worth 6 Golden Coins

A Commodore 64 title and Game Boy classic both shine through this week's virtual console recommendations.

Whether you're looking for a Virtual Console classic on your Wii or your 3DS, this week's recommendations from Nintendo World Report have you covered... as long as you want to play a platformer.

Up first is Carmine Red's take on Tower Toppler, part of the Commodore 64 selection on Nintendo's Wii Virtual Console. Staffers didn't take to some other Commodore 64 games on the download service, will this one be any different?

Then Andrew Brown suffers through Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins to give you his recommendation on the Game Boy classic now available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. Well, okay, maybe "suffer" isn't the right word for it.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

I wouldn't call the Easy mode in SML2 unlockable, it's available from the start.

As for Tower Toppler, I'm surprised it's recommended for everyone. I can't beat the second tower, and I don't really want to. The limited lives and the absence of continues make the game too frustrating to be fun, to me.

I wonder whether the Kirby devs were familiar with Tower Toppler -- there are some vaguely similar levels in Kirby's Adventure.

Ironically, I was the first to decry NWR's "Recommended For Everyone" rating for Kid Icarus way back when.

However, in comparison to Kid Icarus, I definitely feel like Tower Toppler is the good sort of hard. For instance, if I remember correctly, falling down off the screen in Kid Icarus is lethal. In Tower Toppler, you always have the chance to recover as long as you have time and don't fall into the sea. Tower Toppler is, in my opinion, very fair and upfront about when you make a mistake, which is encouraging to play. Other difficult games are, frustratingly, much more punishing.
