I love Nintendo and my Wii, but I love my Xbox 360 too and own a PlayStation 3 (though I mostly use it as a media player to watch DVDs and Blu-ray Discs).

You're a "True Gamer" if you play and love video games, regardless of what systems or what games you prefer.  Really, it's probably best if you own more than one system just so you can be exposed to the wide variety of experiences available in modern gaming.  I own a PS3; 360; Wii; and PSP, and I have too many games to post here.  I primarily play PS3 these days, but the occasional Wii/VC game or XBLA game gets me to playing those systems every once in a while.

I only owned a Wii from mid-2007 until late January of this year when I got a PS3 due to the games drought on the Wii. If the Wii U can get its act together and get strong and consistent 3rd party support then I would gladly return to being a one console Nintendo person, but will that happen?

As for what Broodwars said, I kinda agree and disagree. Sure, if you want to experience every game available then you need to own every system, but that's a very expensive thing to do when the consoles cost $250 each. Even if you had every system, who could afford every game or have the time to play every game? You can't. So its probably best not to worry about experiencing everything. You might miss a handful of exclusives by not owning a certain system, but is it really that big of a deal? As long as you own a system which is receiving a majority of the multiplatform support then you're good to go.

I'm not arguing that you should experience every game available, but the variety of experiences available to you is much greater when you own more than one console.  For instance, my favorite gaming genre is the RPG, probably followed by 3rd person shooters.  Those are two genres that are not strong on the Wii, but are fairly plentiful on the other two consoles.  There's no conceivable way I could play every RPG out there (I'm currently struggling with Star Ocean: The Last Hope right now, with Deus Ex Human Revolution releasing next week), but I'll take having 4-5 RPGs I could be playing at any one time over having just RPGs (and not even very good RPGs) like Opoona; Arc Rise Fantasia; or Tales of Symphonia 2 on the Wii.

Mind you, that RPG selection on the Wii could easily be a great deal better, but Nintendo of America would rather I hand my money over to Sony instead.

Having more systems means having more options, and although the initial investment in a second console may be quite costly, I think it balances out in the long run by having more options available to you.

Just a Wii here, though my PC gets far more use for games.

Having more than one console at a time is overkill and cost prohibited, especially when the PS360 combo isn't going to grant you any more than a handful of exclusives over one another. For someone with a life, I'd say you could be satisfied with just the Wii's library. But if you're one to game sixteen hours a day? Perhaps not...

I suppose I do have a DS Lite, if that counts.

Or Wii and PS3. The Wii is cheap and it probably has the best exclusives because it is the only system that has Nintendo's A+ titles so every gamer should own a Wii as either a primary or secondary console. Whichever other console someone wants to own comes down to preference. But I can't see a reason to justify owning all three unless money is no object to you.

As far as the 360 goes, a lot of its exclusives like Halo and Mass Effect and so on are also available on the PC, so for those who have an up to date PC there's probably not a good reason to have both that and a 360.

and thats kind of sad, dont get me wrong am a die hard nintendo fan since the nes era, but if you only own a wii you have missed a bunch of titles like Uncharted and Mass effect to name a couple that are easily one of best titles this generation has to offer including nintendo made games.

I'm with you. I am a gamer and I own only a Wii, and a Gamecube, and a N64, and a Snes, and a NES, and Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, Gamegear, Gameboy pocket, Gameboy color, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance SP, Nintendo DS, DSi, 3DS, playsation one, PS2, and a Xbox. [\UncleBob]

I would own a PS3&360 if it wasn't for the RROD/YLOD and if they had any games besides sport game rehash of the year and shooter rehash of the month "now with 100 more polygons in the generic space marine's noise hair!"....

To be fair, I think it's been accepted that the RRoD is gone (unless you buy an older system from a few years ago).

At this point if you went this long with only a Wii then you might as well just wait for the Wii U. The PS3 and 360 aren't dead by any means, but why invest heavily in that if the Wii U is just a year off? I'm hoping that a lot of the games from this generation that the Wii missed out on will get ported over to the Wii U (hopefully with enhanced features/content too).

True, the RROD has been gone since late 2008 (as in manufacturing dates). I work on them for a living, and have never, ever, seen a Jasper console with the RROD.

? Kinda strange list, mostly third party and only Metroid titles from Nintendo?

And if your happy with just the WII than that's fine but you might consider getting an 360 or PS3.  Your primary genre seems to be online and FPS so you're missing out of alot of great titles and yeah the WII U launches next year but you can buy an 360 NOW or even a PS3.

You can actually buy systems used, 360 Jasper units (IE they have on board ram vs older units and they have HDMI port too) can be found for $100 with a 20gig drive.  It's the same model I use though I got mine new with cash credit.

All the more reason he should just get a nice PC instead... You know, where all the great online FPS games are. :P

I really don't recommend buying consoles used.  I bought my first PS3 used because I wanted the limited backwards compatibility with PS2 games.  That's one of the worst mistakes I've ever made in gaming, as the console had to be breaking at least twice a year and eventually died permanently last year with an un-fixable Yellow Light of Death.  No matter how attractive the price difference is, you're always better off buying New on hardware.

But to be fair, wasn't your PS3 the older phat model? Even if you buy a system brand new in the box, its important that it be the newer and more reliable models. In the case of the PS3 that would be the Slim, and for the 360 it would be the Jasper motherboard, or newer. I don't think buying used is so bad as long as you do your research first.

When buying used it is also important to make sure the system hasn't been banned. Because if it has been banned from xbox live or PSN there is no way it can ever be unbanned and you would be screwed.

At the time, the Slim model didn't exist so my model wasn't that old.  It was an 80 GB Phat, so it was the last model that had some version of backwards compatibility.  I did the best research I could and I even had the recommendation of a fellow forum member on the source, so I thought the model was a good buy.  It turns out Sony was just that bad with heat management on the PS3 Phat models, and the disc drive was bad almost right out of the box because I had to replace it a couple months after I got it.

It is too bad that there is no way you can get a Slim model PS3 with the emotion chip in it. I suppose its not an impossibility for Sony to add it in at some point, but I have serious doubts about that. More likely they want to get you to rebuy those games off the PSN store. Not to mention this late in the game its all about cutting manufacturing costs.

You can get a brand new PS3 Slim for $249.99 and a brand new PS2 for $89.99 (on sale at Best Buy), so that's $339.98 plus tax, and it will be way more dependable than any backwards compatible PS3 you'll ever find. Of course you lose the benefit of cable management and only needing a single controller...but if you want to play PS2 games, it's the only way to go.
