ESRB Rates Alleyway for 3DS Virtual Console
« on: June 01, 2011, 03:42:51 PM »

Breakout-style Game Boy game among the first to be confirmed for the upcoming download service.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26470

Alleyway, a Game Boy game developed by Nintendo's Intelligent Systems and released in 1989, has been rated by the ESRB as a 3DS Virtual Console title.

The game features gameplay similar to the classic game Breakout, with the player controlling a paddle on the bottom of the screen attempting to keep a ball bouncing to break the wall of blocks at the top. Mario makes a guest appearance in the game as the guy piloting the paddle.

The 3DS Virtual Console is expected to launch with the Nintendo 3DS eShop on June 6. The release date for this specific title is unknown.

Hmm...I think this was either a launch or near launch gameboy game.  Fond memories.  I'll pick this one up.

I am still holding my breath for that first TMNT gameboy game.  But with the licence and all...never happen?

Oh yeah, I know I have 2 sealed copies of that game.   1 is for trading.  But people who collect Amiibos?  They really have a problem!

I'm wondering if from now on as part of the licensing agreement Nintendo  maintains the right to re-release a game in a digital form.

Did the old Ultra Games TMNT game come out on Wii's Virtual Console?  So, maybe there's a chance for the GB games.  Who knows?

Alleyway is so boring, but I think it was one of the first break-the-block games so that's probably why. It doesn't seem worth playing today when there are better games of this type out there, including Kirby's Block Ball which will probably be put up on the service eventually.

Actually, the original Breakout came out in 1976, 13 years before this game. Fun fact, the game was developed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who worked at Atari before leaving to found Apple.

....maybe 2 nothing higher since the gameplay is fairly basic.

How many break-the-block games were released in between?

About 50 million or so. :D

Including Arkanoid, about the most well-known version of the game.

I forgot how awful gaming was in the 70's and 80's. So now Alleyway has no excuse for being bare.
