To be clear, there is absolutely no reason to still be using XP. Windows 7 blows it away.

What if I just don't feel like spending the money to upgrade?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Dell hasn't put out appropriate Windows 7 drivers for my laptop. You think Vista or even XP drivers will work if I do upgrade?

System builder licenses can be had for unbelievably cheap prices. Likewise, student discounts are available to most people (students or not).

What if my computer is 3 years old?

Depends on the specs themselves. Chances are it'll run fine, if not better than what you currently have on the machine.

There's a very good chance that your Vista drivers will work. Most are interchangeable. I wouldn't count on XP drivers doing anything for you however. Just be careful, Dell-specific drivers can be just as destructive as they are helpful. Those damn Dell wireless drivers are the bane of the computer world. :P

After the my last post in this thread 12 days ago I hit the tequila and thought hard about it. After 3 shots and 30 seconds of thought I opened the case and squeezed each RAM stick. One of them squeaked. I tore it out and threw it in the bin. Been problem free since then unless you count bugs in Mass Effect as computer issues.

But now I only have 2GB of RAM :(
Is this what I get for just buying the cheapest/fastest RAM around without regard to brand?

Anybody think 7 isn't worth the switch?

Windows 7 is easily the best product Microsoft has ever put out. Even with XP, it really wasn't worth using until after Service Pack 1. That isn't the case with Win7. Hell, it was rock solid even as a release candidate. Then again, Vista did provide a pretty large amount of feedback and ultimately forced improvement.

To be clear, there is absolutely no reason to still be using XP. Windows 7 blows it away.
Let's be honest though, Win 7 is Vista SP2.

I guess wht a few people have said, that my problems are typical of a Mac users jumping ship and not knowing what was going on, is a fair call. I'm still struggling with some general interface things about windows and wonder why my root C directory is full of like, half a dozen EULA files. What? My 20 years of Macintosh has be hating the lack of unified menu. I guess some people see a unified menu as archaic and restrictive but I'm finding each window inside each program is a new dilemma for me. Some programs have bullshit skins with menus roaming around the side, others have tabs on top that SWAP POSITIONS depending what tab I'm in, all sorts of bullshit.

There you go, some liquid courage never did anyone any harm.

Well with most computer parts if you buy bottom of barrel price wise, you're just asking for trouble, unless its really is a bargain. You buy a step or two above that. You can buy the "premium" stuff, but a good portion of the time your buying the shiny sticker. The exceptions would be the motherboard and CPU. A good motherboard is a foundation of a good computer. With CPUs you only have two choices. It's bang for buck(AMD) or high end performance for $(Intel). Feel free to mix brands assuming you're no buying on the mega budget as they will be made within spec outside of manufacturing issues.

Edit: Now that your on Windows have fun with the focus stealing attention whore programs and the lack of unified update infrastructure that OSX has. But enjoy your games.

Yeah i got a good Gigabyte motherboard and an AMD with two more cores than I'll ever need (two was not a typo.) Got a Sapphire branded ATi VGA card. I heard they (Sapphire) weren't the best but were perfectly acceptable. The RAM was really some company I've never heard of and when I asked a certain anonymous board what are RAM companies worth buying from it wasn't mentioned in the half dozen or so brands mentioned.

DDR3. 1600Mhz or something. It was GOOD RAM it just wasn't built very well. )that's no joke about it squeaking when I squeazed it.
I'm not anywhere near my machine right now but I'll try to lookup what I bought. I think it was called Strontium or something.

So you paid about $120 AUS for a 2x2GB? what does that equal in US dollars?
I only ask because I had gotten 2x4GB chips for about $120 US. Same speed and DDR3.

Oh, you said you want $40 back so I thought you paid $40 more since it was cheaper now. But now I see you want $40 back since half your double pack was trash.

Let's be honest though, Win 7 is Vista SP2.

I agree that in theory Win7 built directly off of what was learned from Vista. Much of the OS is the same, but too much has been changed at the kernel level for it to merely be a Service Pack. Still, without having had Vista first, I doubt Microsoft would have been able to make Win7 as stable and enjoyable as it is.

I'm just waiting for WINE to get to the point where I can play whatever games I want, run Photoshop will full hardware acceleration, and install all of my video editing software. Once that happens, I may never log out of Linux again... my second partition would have to be expanded though. :P

im getting windows 7 pretty soon...my **** just crashed again and i can't take it anymore! I don't even go to porn sites, this **** is just vulverable, even with actual anti-virus software. I turn my computer on and just leave the monitor off, i come back another fake anti-virus has installed itself, i reset, and goddamnit windows wouldnt load up. My xp cds were both scratched, so after hours of trying to re-install it i gave up. When I woke up this morning i realized i could use my dads laptop to burn an ISO and re-install it again...so i did, and it took me all day to get everything the way it should be. Anyways,  my 7 install discs are on their way!

I'm not sure how many of you still use IE, but

Quote
Microsoft has issued a 'critical' security alert that affects 900million people using its Internet Explorer web browser.

The computer giant warned of a newly-discovered flaw in Windows that could be exploited by hackers to steal personal details or take over computers.

The glitch is so severe it potentially affects every user of Internet Explorer.

Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari browsers are all unaffected by the threat because, unlike Internet Explorer, they don't support MHTML files, where the problem lies.

yeah, no i get that from firefox. If Chrome works, its unaffected. I dont know what was up with my last XP install but i could only use Chrome 2 times before it would crash and not work, and id have to reinstall it.

For those interested, Microsoft has just released Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (they had a public test for it last summer). Most of it is just bundling all 796 bug fixes and security improvements together. The only new features included in the Service Pack are for Windows Server 2008 R2: Dynamic Memory for Hyper-V users and RemoteFX.

This is new SP1 is dynamic, it will be a much smaller download if you already have updates installed, which is a new twist.
