Turns out you can forget a gospel choir. Twice.

I'm sitting here now, charging all my electronics in preparation for tomorrow's jaunt to Amsterdam for what looks to be a huge launch event for the Nintendo 3DS.

I've been thinking back to Nintendo's last press conference in Europe. There can't have been all that many, and I don't really remember anything after The Nintendo Breakfast in 2002. The Nintendo Show 2001 was my first press conference, I'd just joined the former green-and-black themed Planet GameCube, as you can tell by the watermark. While reading about the press conference at The Nintendo Show in 2001, nearly a full decade ago, I realised that I may have forgotten about the gospel choir.

Gospel Choir 1

Again. This is something that first happened, or so I thought, at E3 2010. Following Activision's preview event/concert that replaced their show floor presence, we struggled to remember all of the components from a skateboard ramp from the ceiling that never came to fruition, to the heavily delayed start caused by Eminem's sound check, not forgetting the human-operated flamethrowers and indoor fireworks. "We forgot the gospel choir" became one of the catchphrases of the week among "Skittles" and "What is going on?"

Gospel Choir 2

What I also noticed was the premiere of the Pokemon Mini in 2001, and while not a huge exclusive, it gives some history of new announcements for Europe. With the long time between press conferences, what if the big event here is due to a simultaneous Western launch for the 3DS, where it is actually to be launched in Europe first (by a margin of two days, since our games are released on Fridays) and smiling Iwata comes out of nowhere to announce that? That could only be the best outcome.
