Is the SP the sexiest gaming machine
« on: April 11, 2003, 06:23:02 PM »
I got my platinum GBA SP just today, and it is great. Despite the A and B buttons being close together and the R and L buttons being small, this console looks and feels great.  It fits perfectly in my hand, and i have a comparitivly big hand.  It even looks great with its reflective surface and well lit screen.  So heres the question is there a sexier gaming machine then the SP?  In my opinion its only competitor might be like the purple gamecube, got i would go with the SP.  The x-box is certainly out of the question, so is the PS1 and 2 with its boring grey and black colors and designs.  What do you guys think, is the SP the defintion of sexy?

I agree the SP is the sexiest gameing machine. This kind of sounds like a poll so I hope it doesn't get locked. I think the runner up would be the platinum gamecube. That's pretty sweet too. Colbat looks dead sexy also. I really want an SP and I have the money but I'd rather spend it on the great games that are coming out for Gamecube and GBA... My flood light works fine but it certainly doesn't make it look dead sexy like the SP.

I thought the thing was damn sexy even before I got it. Now that I have a shiny platinum SP in my hands, I am in love. It really is the most uber cool sexy little machine ever made.

I can't get over how much better the games look on it's lit screen. The graphics just glow. A few times while playing Golden Sun in the dark I have held the unit back at arms lenght just to admire how beautiful the graphics look now. The differecne is quite amazing. Also, now that I can see with absoloute clarity, a few sticky spots in games that I have been having trouble getting past for weeks, I did on my first try.

ON the minus side, a few games which were obviously made with much brighter colours than necessary to compensate for the old GBA dim screen, now looks horribly washed out. Super Mario Advance is one, too bad it doesn't have an option to use the same pallette as the SNES version. Minor problem, but worth mentioning.

I love this thing so much. Even my mom who couldn't give a damn about gadgets admitted it was pretty cool.

Bleck, I think it looks disgusting. It's a friggin square, people! Just a square with a miniature screen that folds up and down. It really puts the shoulder buttons in horrible positions to reach, in my opinion. When I first held the thing, I had to look around before I got my fingers on them and finally realized I got cramps if I used the thing too often. I think Nintendo would've been a lot better off just making a classic front lit GBA because I can't stand holding that thing for long.

The dreamcast? Meh. Didn't really do it for me, I think it was a little too pale....
it did have nice curves though....

Now the Saturn was nice, it had that great "classic" kinda beauty.....

we seem to be forgetting about the redesigned snes.  that was pretty hot for it's time....

and yeah, i was also a fan of the dreamcast.

gba sp still wins, but not by much.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Bah, the original Master System (Powerbase) was the ultimate in sexy looks. Mmmmm, longer than a Subway Sub, and stunning small pause button on the unit. Aw yeah.

Oh yeah, and yes, GBA SP is drop dead sexy, but even so, it still doesn't get me excited about portable gaming. I'll play the waiting game for the Game Boy Player.

What does being creative have to do with it?

That's kinda like saying that they should make the tires on your car octagonal, because round isn't creative enough.

In my opinion, i think the game boy advance SP is not very good because it does the same as the GBA. The only thing is light, new shape, and rechargeable batteries. I have the new SP, the light is not very good either its weak actually compared to the Sega game gear that was released like 7-9 years ago

Johnny: You have just mentioned three things that are new with with the SP. Two of which are huge, the light, and the battery.  I think that is pretty major.  Also, the fact that you say that the light is not very good compared to the Game Gear tells me two things:

1.) You don't actually own an SP

2.) You do not have any concept or memory of just how BAD the game gears screen was in every way. It was a low resolution, blocky pasive matrix, blurry LCD that was unplayable in well lit rooms or in the car unless it was night time. the light was bright, that's for sure, but it did little to help the game gears screen.

I got my platinum a few days ago, but I think that new colors are needed. I really wanted Black, but they only made it in Japan and it was really expensive to ship, like 45.50 from play-asia. I think black should have been released in the US. Who agrees?
If anybody wants to give me any virtual boy games, that would be, Indubitably, Neat-o.

i just looked at the game gear screen. omg. it looks so krapppy. its blurry, graphics are bad (i thought that they were always good, almost as good as the snes b4 i saw it). I was really suprised when i played it again. it takes frickin 6 AA batteries for the thing AND with that it has only TWO hours of playing time. krap. its so heavy and bulky too. but the sonic games for it are still fun. i want to get sonic adv. 2 as soon as i can get the money.

back to the subject. i think that the sp is so awesome. it is just so tiny. i would also like to add on how much the light improves the COMFORT of playing. Before i talk about that i think that the general shape of the sp is pretty good. i get a little bit less crampiness with the sp with long hours of gaming than the gba. not that much noticeable diff though in terms of comfort. the big difference is that u dont have to get in an ackward position to play the sp. i have gotten neck and back pains from the gba. this is like a temper pedic bed to me. u know... the nasa bed thingy. nevermind. sp looks so cool. its so small. but not too small. its bigger (or nearly the same) than the gb pocket and color in terms of width, so its pretty comfortable.

"Mouse_clicker"
Yeah, I'm in the minority, but excuse me if I don't consider a SQUARE creative.

ummm... do u like the gc? its a cube buddy. and its pretty darn cool lookin and creative to me. and (im saying this in a mocking voice) i hate how the SP looks. its just not creative . if it was creative , it would look good. but its not.
(back to nonmocking voice)
what would be the best compact shape of the sp with retaining its comfortability. and its also supposed to appeal to adults too. thats what nintendo execs said or something.

I remember way back two years ago when I got my GBA. I remebered firing it up and being somewhat disapointed. I had had a Game Gear for years, but had sold it ages ago.  Anyway, when I first played GBA, my mind remebered the Game Gear as being a lot better graphically then it really was. my perception was really warped. Just like you, I didn't precieve the GBA as being any better.

It wasn't until I compares some screenshots, and later found an old Game Gear (yes, I found one, literally)  that I realized just how bad the game gear's graphics were.

Thepoga: Of course I like the Gamecube's design- however, it's more than a simple cube- thought that would've been obvious to someone who owns the console. It also has designbs ON the console. What's the SP? A simple, unadorned SQUARE. You guys are just shellshocked from the shiny color. Do you want to know a good compact design that's the comfortable? The original GBA design. And don't give me that "it appeals to adults" crap- if the first GBA wasn't sellnig well with the adult crowd, it certainly didn't matter seeing as how the GBA is the fastest selling console in history, not to mention still the best selling after several years of release. And where did you get the idea the SP is comfortable? It's about as comfortable as an NES controller, minus the sharp edges. I like the light and the rechargable lithium battery, but Nintendo could've spent a bit longer than 6 minutes on the overall design of the machine.

Oh give me a break. You know, I don't think you even own and SP. I think you want one really bad but can't get one for whatever reason. If you owned one, you woud know that it is actually more comfortable than the original GBA, much, much more compact.

Shellshocked by it's shinny exterior? Hardly. I didn't even want Platinum, I wanted the very un-shiny black. But NOA was too stupid to  release it here.

The original GBA is a goofy looking plastic toy.
