Capcom Outlines Plans For Growth

The Japanese giant plans on setting up shop overseas.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=20618

 Capcom has unvieled a strategy for increasing their overseas sales.  Currently, sales outside of Japan account for 52% of their total income.  Capcom has stated that their goal is to raise that number to 65%.  To do so, they have laid out a three-part strategy in their 2009 annual report statement.

First, Capcom intends to continue to develop sequels to popular titles.  Second, they plan on resurrecting older franchises that were popular overseas, such as Marvel vs. Capcom 2.  Thirdly, they intend to develop new titles that match the preferences of overseas gamers in a partnership with overseas developers.  Games that match this strategy might include Bionic Commando and Dark Void, both of which are for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Capcom didn't specify which platforms their strategy would focus on, but they have been a prolific third party developer for Nintendo in the past.  Titles like Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles and Tsatsunoku vs. Capcom, both Wii exclusives, seem to fit the first and second part of the strategy.  Monster Hunter Tri, another Wii Exclusive, matches up well with the strategy's first and third objectives.

Can I hope for an on-rails Dino Crisis?

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

Mega Man FPS.  Oh wait, that's actually possible...

Whatever comes of this, though, the Wii will not see much action.  It might see one or two projects, but the real action will be with the handhelds and HD consoles...as usual.

Did they mention Marvel vs. Capcom 2 by name here as an example, or was that added by the author?

Capcom actually does mention that game specifically, page 27 of their 2009 financial report (http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/data/pdf/2009annual/e2009annual.pdf). The paragraph says "We have three strategies for “promoting the development of titles for overseas markets”: the regular introduction of the sequels of popular titles, such as “Lost Planet 2” and “Monster Hunter Tri”, with universal market appeal to ensure stable profits; revival of a series of titles that were popular overseas, such as “Marvel vs. Capcom 2”, to capture old and new users; and development of new titles that suit the preferences of the overseas customers, like “Bionic Commando” and “Dark Void”, in partnership with overseas developers."

brood, they are at least promising strong Wii support: "As for “adopting the multi-platform format expansively”, we will launch major titles for Wii, which holds more than a 50% share of the stationary video game console market, and for PS3 and Xbox 360, which hold the remaining 50%."

Well it's about time someone notices and adjust their strategy appropriately.
Let's hope the "launch Major Titles for Wii" part isn't just Capcom blowing cold air up our skirts again :/

I'll believe it when I see it.  However much I like Darkside Chronicles, Capcom hasn't been giving the Wii AAA support since 2007.  Sure, they may put out a greater quantity of games on the Wii in the near future, but I find it hard to believe they'll put the kind of effort into them that they would put into something like a 360/PS3 project.  Hopefully, I'm wrong.

Mega Man Legends 3?
Considering how poorly the first two games sold, I highly doubt such a game would have hope of being released. But with the success of Mega Man 9 resulting in Mega Man 10, I wonder if we will see more Mega Man games on Wii?

But Mega Man Legends would work alot better with pointer controls.

It was a third person shooter right?

Yeah, I guess it was, but it also had a lot of exploration and some RPG elements as well. The game is actually similar to how I imagined a Metroid game could have worked on the Nintendo 64.

I liked the game and yeah, it would work well with Wii controls, but unfortunately I don't see them returning to the series because the second game really bombed.

They'll release Bionic Commando for Wii in 2 years, and call it "Bionic Commando: Grapple Til' You Snapple." It will fail miserably.

I don't know about you guys, but if Capcom's "growth" doesn't support the Wii then I will have no part of it. And if they toss out some weak spin-offs or crap games on the Wii then I for one will see that as an insult. How can they seriously expect growth if they ignore the market leader?
