IMPRESSIONS: Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia

Pokemon for the rest of us.

For those who hate the slow, turn-based gameplay of the main series, Pokemon Ranger is a welcome departure.  The gameplay of Pokemon Ranger differs significantly from the main series in that Pokemon are captured by "capture stylers" rather than defeated directly by Pokemon and captured with a Pokeball, though previously captured Pokemon can lend their powers.  The capture styler is supposed to transmit the positive feelings of the Ranger in order to befriend the Pokemon, and the stylus is used to quickly circle Pokemon.  If the Pokemon are encircled enough times, they are captured (befriended); however, the Pokemon will try to run away or attack the energy circle, which damages the styler.  The gameplay appears similar to the original Ranger DS game, though I've been told that the stylus recognition has been improved.

The Pokemon Ranger demo was short and to the point.  The game started with my character and his companion Chimchar at the base of a forest, which was on fire.  My mission was to capture a Squirtle and harness its aquatic power to put out the fire.  I saw a few Pokemon on my brief journey.  The first was the flagship Pikachu, whose power can recharge the styler.  I also captured a Duduo, which I then rode quickly to avoid engaging other Pokemon.  With some effort, I finally captured the Squirtle to rain down on the fire and complete the mission.

Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia will include Pokemon from the Diamond/Pearl iteration.  The demo I played was colorful, but brief, so it's hard to judge how the full game will turn out.  However, if you were a fan of the previous editions, this one seems to be an improvement, and if you don't like Pokemon, now might be the time to give them another try.

I really should mention; there was only one version of the original Pokémon Ranger too. You're thinking of mystery dungeon.
