NEC SuperGrafx on Its Way to Virtual Console
« on: September 30, 2008, 04:34:57 AM »
Ghouls 'N Ghosts is coming to VC, again.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=16769

Nintendo, through an update of their Japanese Virtual Console release list, has unveiled that gamers will soon be able to play SuperGrafx games on the Nintendo Wii. The SuperGrafx, which was released exclusively in Japan back in 1989, is a minimally enhanced version of NEC’s PC Engine (TurboGrafx 16 for the rest of the world).

The system will debut with a port of Capcom’s popular platformer, Ghouls 'N Ghosts. This will not be the first time Ghouls 'N Ghosts has graced the Virtual Console; the Genesis port was released last summer in North America and Europe.  The SuperGrafx port is known to have superior animation than the Genesis version.

There will be very few future Virtual Console releases for the SuperGrafx, if any. In all, the system only had five dedicated games released, with an additional two PC Engine games, both versions of the shooter Darius, that had slight graphical upgrades when run on the SuperGrafx. Ghouls 'N Ghosts will retail for 800 Wii Points upon its Japanese release in October. There is no word yet if SuperGrafx games will be appearing in the rest of the world.

I think this is the ideal use for Virtual Console - giving us games that we wouldn't go out of our way to get, but might pick up if given the chance.

I'll definitely get SuperGrafx G'n'G if it's released over here.

Is it really worth the development resources to create an emulator for a console that only had 5 games, one of which is already available on the VC?

If that game is better: yes.

It all really depends on how obscure/good the titles are.  If they're too obscure, no one will care.  But, if they're not good, then no one will still care.  If the balance is right, there's profit to be made.

Okay Nintendo, NEC is willing to release the freakin' SuperGrafx and we still don't have Gameboy games?  Come on.  They're not even playable on the DS anyway.

This does seem like a waste of resources but that don't affect us.  Yay more games! :)

This is so niche it actually makes arcade games seem more likely.

Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Yeah, I had to do a double take there. Nice to see more hands on deck so to speak...

Makes you wonder if they'll bother to relabel it SuperGrafx if they decide to bring it to everyone else. Might as well put on under the TurboGrafx label...

Its got at least double the titles of SurperGrafx, though I don't know of any killer exclusives aside from Knuckles Chaotix.  ;)

32X also has Spider-Man: Web of Fire, which I've heard good things about.

i seriously wonder if its worthy of the time to make the emulator. I mean very few people will buy those games on VC and I doubt the effort will be justified by that much money.

now I would LOVE it if Nintendo found a way to emulate the BS satellite games. Now some of those were very unique and they are well known franchises so they will sell, but I think it would be technically VERY hard to emulate it correctly.

Any 64DD games in english ? I always wanted to play Doshin the Giant, I have no clue why Europe got it on cube but NA never did.

You know what information is worth extracting from this? TG16 games actually sold well enough to justify this :P

Nintendo's VC emulator can't even handle the N64 memory pak or expansion pak right now.  I think 64DD support is quite a stretch.

You'd think of all people Nintendo would use WiiFit on occasion.

How do you know it can't handle the expansion pak? I don't think any games that use it have been released so far but they managed to emulate it on the GameCube, albeit with a few problems (Majora's Mask on the Zelda Collector's Edition disc).

Aldynes
Battle Ace
Galaxy Force II (unreleased prototype)
Daimakaimura - aka Ghouls n' Ghosts
Madouou Granzort

But we'll probably get it before rumble pak emulation.
