Kororinpa - Don't miss this gem
« on: December 30, 2007, 04:27:46 PM »
I finally picked up this game and fell in love, and needed to spread it. I feel guilty for only just playing it now. If you don't know i'm a big fan of Banana Blitz and just laughed at Kororinpa being compared to it, but Kororinpa stands up on its own as a fantasticly unique experience. It's very well made, great graphics (screenshots do NOT do it justice), really good music, and all this for a (Japanese) LAUNCH game. It blows the presentation of the "big" third party launch games, Monkey Ball / Rayman / Red Steel out of the water. And most of all, the controls / gameplay are a ton of fun and rock solid. I really can not find any basic faults with this game, the controls are flawless, and even though you can't jump it still feels like you have way more control over your ball in this than Monkey Ball. Even the wiimote speaker use is well implemented (different sounding "thuds" when your marble / whatever you are using hit different surfaces). It feels more "realistic" than Monkey Ball, like the ball actually drops and rolls rather than "running", and you can tilt the whole map upside down and just fling off the stage whenever you feel like it, it's basically a whole other layer.

*Actually I do have a fault and that's the way you can't really take hardcore shortcuts because if you try and skip a whole bunch of platforms and things you just "disappear" and fail the stage, which hurts replayability a bit. BUT, amazing game! Are there any fellow Kororinpians in here?

Oh yeah, the ONLY two faults to this game are:

1. It ends too early.
2. You can't make epic shortcut jumps.

I've seen it in the bargain bin for $20 - I might pick it up now.

It does end pretty early, I played through the entire main levels with a friend in the cool split screen mode. (why can't Sega even do that?) But there is a lot of replayability and unlockables for getting gold medals and those hidden gems. Not to mention the multiplayer mode itself. Great value for a cheap price, which I admittedly bought it for.

Yes, do! It's a very charming game. Short yeah (though beating the best times and collecting all the secret gems extends the games playlife by a lot!), but wow. Beautiful environments, great music and amazingly precise controls. I'd love to see a sequel! Also still my favorite Wii game box art ever.

I was able to pull off some pretty crazy shortcuts in some of the night city levels! By sheer fluke!

I bought and beat this game months ago. I absolutely loved it. I should go back and play it again.

Speaking of this, is Mercury Meltdown any good?

It is. Quite creative in its puzzles and an assload of content. More of a thinking game than pure skill orientated, and the controls reflect this by being a bit slower paced. There's a thread here somewhere about it

This game definitely gets a lot more hardcore when you try and get all the gold medals. The challenge is perfect, i've been playing about an hour a day and it's still as fun as the day I got it.

Also WOW, check out the official site of the game. I was stuck on one levels gold medal so I googled any tips and went straight to www.kororinpa.com and it's got VIDEOS of EVERY LEVEL and tips. What an amazingly dedicated developer (if that IS the official site), their dedication reeks throughout the game too.

It's too bad that Konami published it...ugh... to DIE.
