GBA SP recharger/ Power supply
« on: March 23, 2003, 02:52:49 PM »
Is the GBA SP ac recharger just that, a recharger or can it be used as a power supply.  I know games can be played while charging but I want to keep it plugged up to the charger even after its full.(When im at home and not on the road).  Does it will it affect the SP's battery life.

Its better to charge it before its compleatley empty.  That way the battery will last you longer.  There shouldnt be anything wrong with you leaveing it plugged in all the time.

It is said in the instruction booklet INCLUDED IN ALL GBA SPs BOXES (you know that thin thing everyone just throw away?) that it's better to never have an empty battery but not leave it on the charge all the time.

If you want more detail, read that booklet man... Everybody should read that at least once.

Yes I do. The question was not if the adapter recharged the lithium battery, but if it could be used as an alternate power supply, rather than running off of the internal battery, therefore prolonging the life span of the gameboy's battery. The instruction booklet never addresses this problem. Duh. Geez, pay attention.

P.S. Next time spell "maybe" right.

well...  if it's anything like a laptop...i  t uses the battery as a voltage regulator to prevent the unit from experiencing the voltage spikes and dips that normal current from an outlet would have.  so, i would assume the battery is constantly charging and being used while plugged in, so it isn't really prolonging the overall life, you just won't have to charge it as soon.

Instruction booklet -> section 4 -> left side -> last par. -> first line ->

When you are finished playing, always turn your system OFF, and unplug the AC adapter (if you are using it) from both the wall socket and Game Boy Advance SP.

Seems pretty clear to me. As to if it will or not affect battery life, I would follow the constructor advice and assume that letting the SP alway plugged is indeed shortening the battery life.

Well according to this thread the charger shuts off after it has recharged the battery and therefore can be plugged in continously without problem. On the same note though I doubt very much the charger can be used as an alternative power source.

OK so I've read the GBA SP manual already, but I need someone to just clearly clarify this for me, here's the deal...
My GBA SP is fully charged, so I decide to play it for say, 2 or 3 hours.  After I'm done playing would it be wise to just plug it in so that it may charge? (even though obviously the orange indicator isn't anywhere close to lighting up) or will that somehow wear out the battery?  I'd appreciate an answer here because I'm a freak who likes to have MAX POWER at all times thanks fellas.

Think of it like a cel-phone: If you're going to be using it every day, then you'll want to put it on the charger when you get home.  Even if it did wear out the battery, I'm sure Nintendo's repair centers would replace it with little or no cost.
