THe Most Anticipated Rock Album of 2007
« on: May 18, 2007, 12:03:02 AM »
If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's from a band we all know well, Linkin Park. Their album Minutes to Midnight has somehow been labeled the most anticipated album release this year from a Rock Artist.

Having just listened to the Album I just wanted to share my thoughts.

THIS CD BLOWS.

This damn CD violated my freaking ears. From the first track to the last this album was uninspired, boring and flat out crappy. The rap tracks have no purpose other than to spout off a few swear words, the "rock" tracks pick up and never go anywhere, and it seems like each track on the CD they are trying to imitate a different artist. You're Linkin Park, you weren't some extremely talented set of artists at any point, so stop thinking you can be all of a sudden. Go back to making your Rap-Rock, radio friendly hits and stop trying to be artistic.

I give it a 0/5 because literally every track is awful. I feel ripped off and I didn't even buy the CD. What do you guys think?

Ahahahahaha I enjoy this sort of emo internet posting. Let's rap!

Seriously, who are you? Do you choose to ignore their first two albums?

Sure, this album is not like their first two efforts - from the outset this was their goal, the whole process of making the album was done differently (I've only listened through once, but I haven't passed judgment yet), but for you to come out and call them untalented swine (well, I added the swine part) is pretty ignorant.

Yes, it was highly anticipated. We all know how popular Hybrid Theory was, and the follow-up album stuck to the same formula and was high-quality (but did not have as much of an impact). I wouldn't say that it grabbed me like their first two albums.

Feel free to find me the references where people have referred to Minutes to Midnight being a Rock album or Linkin Park being a Rock artist. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere as most people seem to actually know Linkin Park.

EDIT: Updated with quote tags for extra emphasis of this drama bandwagon!

At no point did I call them untalented, but they certainly are only good at one formula. Though radio-friendly, their first two CDs were at least catchy; sure they were simplistic, but I enjoyed them. When bands get this crazy idea that they need to start being artistic they fall apart, this is no exception. Instead of sticking to the formula that brought them success, clearly the formula that people appreciated, they decide to make this garbage that has no identity and no consistency. They are great within their formula, but as this CD clearly demonstrates, they don't have anywhere near the versatility of a band like Incubus for example. If you want to take your music in a new direction at least make it cohesive and consistent, this album doesn't do this at any point. Every track on the album doesn't sound like it belongs with the other tracks in the least.

As far as them being considered Rock, what do you want to call them? I suppose you could just call them Pop and leave it at that, but most of their efforts fall into the Rock category before they fall into anything else (I guess Nu-Metal fit them at one point as well).

EDIT: By the way, just for good measure I went and found a few resources that clearly label Linkin Park as Rock.

I agree. Maroon 5s new album is much better, though that isn't really rock either.

I thought Chinese Democracy was the most anticipated rock album of 2007. And probably also 2008 and 2009 and 2010.

"THIS CD BLOWS."

If I was a music critic I would copy and paste this for almost every review written in the last ten years.

Mr. Jack maybe you don't like the new Linkin Park album because you're no longer a teenager.  It's like when I graduated high school and suddenly realized "Wait a minute.  The Offspring suck!"

"When bands get this crazy idea that they need to start being artistic they fall apart"

Actually I agree with that.  I don't know if this arguement makes sense for this album because I've never heard it and will go out of my way to never do so if possible but that does seem to happen with lots of bands.  Once they believe their own hype they turn to sh!t.  They're always better when they're just making stuff they like and kinda fluke out.  This totally happened with the Tragically Hip.  I used to like them and then everyone was hyping up how poetic the lyrics were and how they were like the Beatles of Canada and sure enough their next album sucked (this is the album with Poets on it) and I haven't liked a new Hip song since.  Hell this happens with TV shows and movie series as well.

It's only fitting.

Spiderman 3 was the most anticipated movie of the year.

And that movie blows.

Let's lump Halo 3 into this as well, since it has a 3 in it since video games are also part of the grand marketing master plans that sony helped pioneer by creating oceans of hype to get massive success for products that won't stand the test of time.

you really can't compare spider-man 3 and halo 3 to linkin park. mostly because no one who likes their ears was looking forward to the new linkin park cd.
