I thought this was pretty funny

I have a few questions for the people who put this together:

1. How about a real test case instead of a news reporter who just met the kids as an example of the dangers of DS PICTOCHAT?
2. Um shouldn't parents have already told their kids not to give out an address?
3. So I take it that only kids play NDS? What about PSP with no security features? I suppose kids don't play that either (well that may be true, but not just kids lol)
4. I'm sorry but no child molester is going to be within 300 ft of a kid in a crowded mall and be able to find them in a crowd of people.
5. The distance thing is subjective here, in the mall there are no barriers so of course the distance will have greater range!

Well they could look for the kid with the DS, who would probably be sitting down at a bench or table or something for ease of messaging. But yeah, the media will attempt to make a story out of anything...

It says the story is new, but I remember the exact same one a long time ago.. it might even be over a year ago now. I'll try look for it. It's these sorts of things that make Nintendo stick with Friend Codes.

Why do they need a NDS then if they are so close they can see them? I'm sorry this thing seems absolutely ridiculous! Not to mention the fact I doubt many kids use the Pictochat anyway besides maybe passing notes or something in class.

Would it be a year ago, because some of the kids had the Red NDS and the Pink one, so it couldn't have been that long ago.

Just over two years after the release of the DS, a journalist has suddenly uncovered a dangerous flaw, one that millions of parents have missed? This is beyond the scope of typical journalistic moral depravity and ignorance; a normal news frenzy would have more quickly followed the identical story from a year ago; this is a hired Sony hit piece.

Well, kids can do a lot of things they're told not to... (like the study on guns, and kids lectured not to play with them). The address example in the skit was not entirely the kids fault... it's almost like the reporter, already AT their home, was quizing them. The kid want to get it right likely otherwise the reporter might say she didn't even know her own address

There can be a risk in close proximity - that's kind of what kidnapping is. Kids get taken out of malls, parks, airports, and restaurants every day. Image they ask the kid to go check something out through a window... drawing them close to an exit where they can just grab the kid and go.

While the news story is a bit on the dramatic side - like most news stories today, I think the point was to make parents aware of the fact that PICTOCHAT exists or even what it can and cannot do. Which most parents probably don't relise.

Wow the DS is even more badass than I thought! You can communicate with another DS over 300 ft away, that's awesome!

But seriously, who uses Pictochat? Learn how to be a goddamned parent and you don't have to worry about your kids giving away vital information to molesters. It's just ridiculous. All of a sudden these women were said to be good parents, but they didn't read the user manual. Seems contradictory to me. If I am going to by my children a device that I know (or should know) has a communication ability, I am going to sit down and talk to them about using it and who they should and should not talk to with it. Don't blame Nintendo because you are a damned lazy parent. Nintendo puts the information out there and lets parents know what they should do, not to mention develops ridiculous security measures just to make sure kids aren't in danger and are only playing games with their friends.

I like it, picotochat gets slammed for potential local wireless communication. While xbox live, which gives WORLDWIDE communication, IN GAME, gets a pass even though it already has at least a couple of documented cases of use by Pedo's.

I've used Pictochat in a bar with my friends in Montreal when the band playing was so insanely loud that we couldn't even hear each other. That worked out pretty well.

On the subject, I just have to mention how much I f*cking hate bars, restaurants, etc. where there's a band playing insanely loud music with the intention of attracting people in from the street. I have sensitive hearing so those places basically make it impossible for me to patronize them, not to mention the aforementioned issue where you need to scream at the top of your lungs in order to communicate with the people you came to eat/drink with. It basically rules out any chance of actually socializing while in that establishment.

On the subject of bars, the worst so far was that restaurant in the Beach area we went to a few years back. The concept is at least understandable in a bar. But in a restaurant where people NEED to say their orders to the waitresses? That's stupid.

Actually what I meant was that in a restaurant it is vital to have the appropriate sound levels because people need to clearly say their orders and waitresses need to listen as well as possible so they can write the order correctly. Having a loud, live band in FRONT of the customers defeats that purpose and defeats the purpose of dining.

I mean, imagine if you are VERY allergic to something and you demand to remove it from your food. Since the band is so freaking loud the waitress can't hear it and doesn't put it in the order. They bring your food, you eat and get an allergic reaction of the worst kind. You can easily sue the restaurant since it was their decision to play loud music during a vital time and could've been prevented if the waitress could hear you well.

So not having loud music is not only vital for the most pleasant dining possible it guarantees that the customer gets what they want.

So again, as much as you hate it, live music in a bar is understandable at the very music. Loud music in an active restaurant isn't.

But we are derailing the thread here, so we'll stop...
