Iwata gets it.

Quote

"Any system will sell well following launch," said the Nintendo president, "but there will definitely come a time where it will stop selling. Even the DS hit a rough spell after selling 1.5 million units a month after launch. The flame was really lit a year after launch, after Nintendogs and Brain Age became big hits. With the Wii, we have to make good software just as we did with the DS."

Hopefully Nintendo will speed things up a bit so they get the good the software out before it becomes a DS drought (Wasn't it until August when the DS finally got a decent flow of good games?).

Of course he gets it. They're the ones who developed the strategy and built the controller.

EDIT: The DS had somewhat of a drought, but there was Kirby and Meteos inbetween, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Make good software for the Wii. Brilliant strategy, thanks Napoleon

I think what he's saying is that they aren't going to sit back and say hey the Wii is selling like hotcakes, let's put our legs up and see where this goes.

Instead they're going to be agressive in making quality million selling games.

Good ol' Iwata, the man has done wonders for Nintendo. The DS and Wii are probably gonna follow alot of the same patterns in terms of how they sell.

I haven't heard a good Iwata quote in a long time. Before the Wii launch, it seemed as though every word Iwata, Reggie, or Perrin Kaplan said received massive attention. A simple comment like "We have big plans for the Wii" (fake example) could turn into speculation about Nintendo's online gaming structure.

I'm always glad to see Nintendo speak with modesty and caution about their successes. One could argue that it is just marketing to please fans like us, but there is no doubt Nintendo is succeeding. Iwata is doing something right.
Thanks for listening.

The Nintendo leader revealed to the site that he's been using Nintendo's Japan-only DS cooking software, Cooking Navi, to cook every weekend.
HEY! LISTEN! DON'T COOK ME!

It didn't seem like he was implying this, but I hope Nintendo doesn't think that Wii versions of Nintendogs and Brain Age will do the trick when it comes to making the Wii as successful as the DS. They could help, but warmed over DS games won't further expand the market.

Who in the world said anything about the Wii becoming a glorified DS port machine?  Damn, the pessimism is thick around here these days, it's almost like any good news get turned into something doom and gloom before the whole article is read...

Well, it's always good to hear Iwata say things like this, but I'm personally going to wait until GDC before I get excited. The GDC will be the perfect opportunity to show that Nintendo has concrete plans to maintain the Wii's momentum.

The GDC is the place to tell other developers how to properly work with the Wiimote, it is NOT a tradeshow for giving ads to the press.

I don't know...I think that this year, especially since E3 has been downsized, there will be a lot of info to be had from the GDC.

"We need good software" should not be a profound statement... but sadly that's the state of the industry (Sony might want to write that down). The real question is, what sort of software will be "good" on the Wii?

It seems like killer apps have a way of sneaking up on you. When Brain Age came out in Japan it seemed like a quirky little game that might sell a bit... and in fairly short order we had senior citizens renting DSes from local hospitals. When Pokemon came out it was very low priority and nobody really expected it to sell... a decade later and it's an industry unto itself.

God only knows what form a Wii killer app will take.

What Nintendo needs most is a game like Wiisports to help fill the gaps, games that will attract and KEEP people's attention from all age groups (I'm sorry elitists, but these games are important as well as the "gamer" games). These games mixed with some traditional games should be a great formula to keep Wii chugging along at a brisk pace.

These games also don't need to be huge, just consistent solid hits. Right now Wario Ware has a bit of buzz left in it, Wii Play is coming out then Sonic. They kicked Mario Party 8 back to April to let the third parties rule March.... and who knows what will fill in the gaps during the May to Fall pre-blockbuster season.

I'm kind of upset with Wiiplay so far, I checked with my local gamestop and they are no longer taking preorders.  I sure hope there is no shortage! Granted Wiiplay probaly won't be Wiisports calibur but it will be engaging even if for a few minutes, and heck it is basically 10$ since I need one last Wiimote!

I was going to say the same thing KDR said GDC isn't like E3 was. When Miyamoto speaks he is more likely to talk about things developers can do with the Remote, and the new success they are having with whomever it was that made that device that could capture Remote movements and then translate them to code saving the developers countless hours. He may mention some games that he's working on that utilize the techniques he speaks of, but it's not going to be a hey my killer app is better than yours type of deal. At least that's my impression of what goes on.

What happened last year? There were a few new things, but nothing like a full release list, and in the pipe software for the rest of the year, maybe I'm wrong, this is actually an occasion where I would like to be wrong.

Didn't they unveil Phantom Hourglass at last year's GDC? I'm hoping for another surprise or 2 this year. We likely see a new Brawl trailer at the very least.

I think Iwata's statement is a good statement no matter what the state of the industry is. He shows us that Nintendo is not going to be a bunch of arrogant cocky pricks like they used to be when they tasted some success. He knows clearly that in order to stay in business and to truly make the Wii a success they need to continue to support the system and carry that torch.

In my opinion, Nintendo caught a lucky break with the DS. The PSP just happened to not make a big splash when it launched, for a variety of reasons, and Nintendo had hit full stride shortly after that point. From the time I bought my DS (Launch day) I only had 3 games until Nintendogs/Animal Crossing/Brain Age came out; I was riding on Warioware, Mario 64 DS, and Yoshi's Touch & Go. Needless to say, I wasn't playing too much DS. Nintendo needs to fill the time before the masterpieces come out to stay at full power. I'm just glad Iwata realizes this and is looking to change that up with the Wii.

In my opinion, Nintendo cashed in on an appropriate strategy with the DS.  Nobody saw Nintendogs or Brain Age coming.  I figured both would flop outside of Japan, but Brain Age was in last year's top 10 for North America, and Nintendogs put Nintendo ahead of PSP for one month when it came out.  These are not your usual blockbusters.  How is PSP supposed to compete with this?  It's not like Brain Age buyers would have chosen PSP instead if only it had had that Final Fantasy VII spinoff a little sooner.  (Has that game even come out yet?)

It is partly a failure on Sony's part, the system lacks games, but for the sake of argument, PSP was winning North America until last May - when DS Lite and New Super Mario Bros. came out.  I think Nintendo deserves 99% of the credit for DS' success.

Iwata's right, and I'm glad to see he's thinking this way. We already know Wii Motorsports and Wii Music are in the works - the company is not relying on past concepts.  (LOL)
That's my opinion, not yours.
