is it all hype? (UK onlooker)
« on: November 21, 2006, 03:45:01 AM »
I'm from the Uk and don't get the Wii til December ,  I was excited about getting it a few weeks ago, after wacthing Gamespots On the Spot "We Got a Wii" marathon.

After the posts and reveiws since the US release, does the Wii live up to what was expected, or was it all hype ..

I don't want to be disappointed when december rolls around, so i'm hoping that the reveiws and posts are based on personal opinion rather than a unanimous "Wii isn't too good"

Like with Red Steel reviews, (I dont particularly want this game), but i was so looking forward to Zelda. Despite the Wiimote speaker problem, is this game still good?

I'm looking to pick up Zelda, Monkey Ball, Trauma Centre and Rayman., do you recommend them?

I'm aiming for mostly a worthwhile way to play with a few friends and not for them to get bored of the minigames and such.

oh and goes without saying that Metroid will be in my collection when it actually gets released ¬.¬

Here's my formal Wii review, take it for what it's worth.

Well, honestly it's a bit of a mixed bag. First, I absolutely love the system interface. The pointer menus and the way the remote beats when you cross over a menu item is surreal. It just feels so incredibly right. The Wii Channels are a innovative way of showing off the features of the system, I just hope there ends up being more than a few non-gaming channels, or it will seem kind of unnecessary.

The first thing I did was put together a Mii character, and I think I was able to get a reasonable facsimile of myself. I booted up Wii Sports and played a game of Tennis, and found that it reacted pretty well to my shots. Sometimes it doesn't go the way I intended it to go, and sometimes it serves when I'm not ready, but when it IS reacting how it's supposed to, the experience is unrivaled. Wii Sports is probably the best way to show off the potential of the system - far better than any of the other launch titles. My personal favorite is bowling. I had some issues with letting go of the ball too early, but once I got the hang of it, I couldn't put it down. Boxing was okay, but a bit unresponsive, and I didn't have the patience to finish a game of golf or baseball.

The second game I played was Super Monkey Ball. I had been really looking forward to this, because the motion sensing controller SHOULD work very well with the game concept. But unfortunately, I had a hell of a time trying to learn how to tilt the controller properly. It was very difficult to remember not to move the remote from side to side, only tilting it left and right. I did eventually get the hang of the main game down, but never felt like I had the same amount of control as I did with the analog stick on the Gamecube titles.

The mini games were hit and miss, but sadly more miss than hit. I did have a lot of fun with Monkey Darts - you just jab the controller at the screen and let go of the A button to throw the dart. But most of the games that used the tilt functionality were very difficult to control. Kelly and I sat there for probably 25 minutes trying to learn how to play Monkey Bowling. When we did learn, I was still unable to throw a straight ball, and it just really paled in comparison to Wii Sports Bowling. Monkey Target was completely stripped down, which was sad - that was my favorite mini game from the original Super Monkey Ball.

I'd rather have 6 polished mini games than 50 half-assed ones.

Trauma Center: Second Opinion was up next. I didn't spend much time with this game, because it appeared to be a note-for-note remake of the DS version. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I just didn't feel compelled to play through the same game again. Now, I haven't FINISHED the DS version yet, so it's still SOMETHING new. I did really like the interface, using the Nunchuck to select which tool to use, and using both fingers (A + B) to pinch something and pick it up. Very clever. Basically, it's just a pointer game. I almost feel that Trauma Center would work better as a flash game on eBaums World.

And then, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Honestly, I had no intention of picking this game up at launch. I didn't see the point - a game of this stature deserves a certain amount of dedication and free time, and I didn't see that window opening until 2007. But, when I saw it on the table of games, I couldn't resist. I had to have it. It's frickin' Zelda. Come on.

The game has a pretty inconspicuous opening. Just a bit of dialog, a hint of backstory, and you're on your way. A lot of publications have been slighting the game for having "GameCube" graphics, but come on. These graphics are amazing. Maybe I just don't have a good enough TV, but the animation, art direction, and special effects are all top notch. This game REEKS of production value.

The game controls much the same way as any Zelda before it, for the most part. You use the nunchuck attachment to control Link with the analog stick. The A and B button, combined with the C and Z button on the nunchuck are your action buttons. The pointer fairy acts as your on screen interface for swapping weapons, and aiming your range weapons.

I've put the most time into Zelda so far, and I've been pleased with it. It's been challenging, but not too challenging. It hasn't lost my interest yet, and with my short attention span, that's saying something.

All in all, the Wii works best with games that use the pointer rather than the tilt system. Not that the tilt doesn't work, it's just way harder to gauge how much you need to tilt the controller to get the desired effect, and even HARDER to try to get it back to a tilt-free level. That's my biggest beef with the Wii so far. But Wii Sports and Zelda have justified my purchase. I'm looking forward to many more happy hours with my Wii.

While I won't have a Wii till December 25th what I will tell you is don't let any initial disappointments, criticisms, issues and problems spoil the overall experience.

As I mentioned in the other thread I made, no console launch goes smoothly and comes with triple A games. True, the Wii games and console are no exception, but even then the Wii launch is perhaps one of the most rock solid launches Nintendo has ever done since the SNES. It has the killer APP, the great party games, the solid third party ports and the original games.

If you actually expect the Wii to be 100% perfect since day one you will be disappointed as it is isn't. Give the system some time, enjoy what you have and viva Wii!

The Wii is more than I EVER thought it could be.

Let me put it even more succinctly: this is the most incredible piece of technology I have ever seen in my entire lifetime. Period f*cking end.

This system is the closest I've come to recapturing the high N64 and NES gave me.  I was kind of disappointed that DS didn't capture that feeling for me, but this...this is awesome.

I love the interface and channels.

I love the motion control.

I love Wii Sports and Zelda.

I suspect I'd love a number of other games, but I haven't got the money to buy any yet.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Even though I was pretty excited about the Wii, I had reservations about it. I was worried  it was a lot of hype and I'd regret getting it at launch instead of waiting to play it first but once I got it home those worries were gone withing minutes of using it. It really is a great system.

I like DrewMG's impressions.  They seem very honest and they're detailed without spoiling the games for you.

Right now I think it's too early to get a real feel for if the Wii has lived up to the hype because the hype is still there.  Those that have a Wii just dropped a decent amount of money and camped out after months of anticipation.  There is going to be a bias because no one wants to go through all that only to find out what they got wasn't worth it.  So for now everything is going to be amazing because that "OMG I HAVE A WII" feeling is still there.  In a few weeks that buzz will have worn off and we'll get better impressions.

I remember when I first got a Cube I was blown away but the explosion prior to the Factor 5 logo in Rogue Leader.  Little stupid sh!t like that was impressing me because the Cube was so new and neato and I had waited like a year for it.  A few weeks later it wasn't quite as impressive and my opinion of the console was more informative.  A few days after launch it was just "THIS IS THE BEST CONSOLE EVER".

But the good thing is we haven't heard "boy the Wii sure sucks".  If the console was lousy enough that negative opinions could break through the "new console buzz" then we would be in trouble.

Actually, I wasn't excited about the Wii like I am now until AFTER I played it.

I've been able to repress the "excitement" response ever since SSBM disappointed me so badly after I looked forward to it like it was the 2nd coming.

When I say that Wii sports is the best party game I've ever played, I'm not lying: this is precisely what it is and I've already scheduled friends over just to try it out.

For FPSes, I've only played Red Steel and CoD3, but I already love what the Wii does for FPSes. The ability to simply hold A and then point, POINT, at the german/yakuza I want dead is not only phenomenal but immensely satisfying.

I love the channels, I love that they made the photo channel so it turns photos into puzzles and that all four players can solve them at once, or just doodle on the photos if they so desire. Everything about this console is thoroughly dedicated to fast and easy FUN, that's it. No bullsh*t, just having a hell of a good time.

I didn't know what to ACTUALLY expect from the Wii, but I got more than I could have imagined hoping for.

I still cannot believe that the same bumbling company who produced and haphazardly supported the GC is the same company who brought the Wii to fruition...

Agreed though I do have to disagree about his comments on Monkey Ball. It might take 30-45 minutes to truly master the controls, but they do work and work very well.

How is COD 3 Wii? I'm not into those WWII FPS' but a buddy of mine loves 'em. He bought a Wii and was looking forward to buying it, but only had enough money for 1 game and that was Super Monkey Ball.

I noticed that on day 2, Monkey Ball was a little easier.  Someone recommended holding it less like a remote and more like a mouse, and that helped quite a bit.

I may try it again sometime soon, when the ADD-ness of having a new system wears off.

Only time will tell if the hype holds up.  Fortunately, time I've got.  So far it looks like the only must have game is Zelda.  Hopefully, by next summer, there will be a nice selection of games to choose from.

Very enjoyable but sadly only single player.

The only complaint I have about the game is that, on the hardest setting, you can be concealed behind a stone wall while a fellow American soldier is standing right next to you in the open firing away, but the minute you crawl far enough to poke your head out from behind the base of the stone wall, you immediately start being shot.

My advice is to play on normal or below for this reason. Otherwise, I think I like the controls better than Red Steel, strangely enough, but that might be because I'm going for accuracy in RS instead of throwing as much lead as possible.

On the topic of hype - yes I'm biased, but at the same time I can honestly say that within an hour or two of playing GameCube, the initial wow factor was wearing off.  I've put something like 14 hours into Wii, and I'm still impressed by every minute of it.  I can't wait to play it with other people again.  My mom was playing with us and kept trying to get my dad to join.  She told me to bring it back on Friday when they have guests and to bring it along to my Grandparents' place for Christmas.  My mom had 0 interest in GameCube, and maybe 0.1 interest in N64.

There are problems!
- the speaker in the controller is not so great (but works fine for certain types of sounds and can be turned down)
- the motion sensing is not 100%
- in Wii boxing in particular, the motion sensing is imperfect - yet it's still fun
- the Channels may run out of space for VC games?? (Nintendo can send out a firmware update if so)
- the first firmware update caused some issues

There are good things!
- Wii sports is even better than I imagined, and anyone can learn it
- Twighlight Princess controls better than any previous 3D Zelda
- The controller has tons of potential
- The interface is great and the photo channel is awesome

Basically, the system makes gaming new again.  Sure I'm going to adjust to it after a while, but I adjusted to Xbox 360 graphics without even buying one.

Edit: If you're waiting to make sure Wii has a good lineup of games, then good on you.  This could turn out like N64 - I loved that system so much at first, but the lineup was very disappointing overall.  However, like N64, that's a risk I'm willing to take in order to play these fun new games - and I have a feeling Wii is going to do very well in terms of game selection.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I'm totally loving my wii, seems like I'm constantly finding things that suprise me about, things I hadn't heard from anywhere else.  Like you can turn the system on or off with one of the wiimotes and if turning the system off, it automatically turns all the controllers off.  The controllers won't turn on if the system isn't on, and they seem to be pretty good with the batteries, though that'll remain to be seen.  If someone wants to jump in a game, all they have to do is pick up a controller and the controller automatically turns.  If a controller sits for a while unused it will turn off.  If you have multiple controllers on, and you jump into a single player game (Zelda) the other controllers turn off.  I'm sure there's more, but it honostly feels very high tech.

The remote does seem a bit heavy to me after playing for more than 15 minutes or so.  I've found that to play longer I need to hold it in a certain way.

Most of the problems I've had with motion detection honestly feels like more of a software problem than a hardware problem, meaning that the next wave of games should feel better in that regard.

The games I picked up on launch day were Red Steel, Zelda, Rayman, Excite truck and of course Wii sports.  Wii sports was suprisingly fun.  I'm sure you've gathered that's it's a good game collection from the reviews.  My friends seems to like bowling best, with boxing being a close second.

Raymen takes very good advantage of the wii controllers.  It's probably my favorite game so far, my arms are very sore thanks  to it, heh.  The humor in the games is really great, you're constantly torturing those rabbids.  The mini games seems to be made with endurance in mind as part of it, like with "Bunnies love carrot juice" after 1 minute, the bunnies really start coming at you, but you've been pumping for a minute, so your arm is starting to get tired.  It gets frantic as you're strugling to keep your arm pumping and keep the bunnies off you.  I really like how the physical aspect is incorporated into the games.  All but one of my friends had a blast playing this.  My biggest complaint against raymen is there aren't enough mini-games that let you play simoultaniously, usually it's not too painful to play turn-based though.  The games are funny enough and quick enough.  Other complaint is that you have to unluck games to play in multiplayer in singleplayer mode, which isn't a problem except that means you have to play single player before your can jump in with your friends.  Me and my friends took turns in singleplayer mode, and this worked well enough.

Zelda is definetly good, though I don't really like having to flick my wrist to swing the sword.  It just feels like work, probably becuase I need to swing twice to get a swing of the sword, the first time to draw the sword, the second time to actually swing it, and in a fight I tend to swing faster than the animation goes, so I don't always get a swing for every flick.  Everything else works great.

I'm definetly sold on the potential for the wii, the first wave of games doesn't capture it exactly, there are kinks to work out and such, but they definetly show what's possible.  I don't regret any of my purchases here, after playing it I'm pretty sure that this is definetly the way of the future.  The possibilities are endless, I'm excited to see what type of game will behere a year from now.

DAMN that's impressive.. I knew by reading "Iwata Asks" that they examined nearly every minor detail, but that's just awesome. Small things like this really show how much love Nintendo poured into the console..
