Or better yet, just get an emulator for free...

For games, I would suggest Xenogears, Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean 2, Dragon quest VII, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Parasite Eve, Breath of Fire 3, Breath of Fire 4, Vagrant Story, and Gran Turismo 2.

Driver, Driver 2 , and resident Evil although the graphics are very dated in comparison to the remake.

You just mentioned two PSX games I have a supreme hatred for....

Chrono Cross - A sad excuse for a sequel of Chrono Trigger.  It's not THAT bad of a game I suppose, but Square didn't even try to continue the legacy.  For that reason, the game should be scorned.  You aren't missing anything if you don't play it anyways.  Nothing special.

Final Fantasy Chronicles - Get the SNES versions.  The PSX versions do nothing but detract from the experience.

I might add though, that Final Fantasy Origins is quite a good remake, although it's a LOT easier than the NES versions.

wow- some one i can agree with
i didnt like chrono cross that much- it just wasnt as good as chrono trigger- i think they tryed to hard to make the game good that they forgot what made chrono trigger so much fun
i think it was the amount of characters that did it- it basically didnt allow you to level up that often
the story was good as were the graphics and music but it just wasnt as much fun as chrono trigger
the battle system wasnt as good either
i call the big one bitey.

heh, i've been thinking of doing that to play psx games.  i really wanna play Grandia bad, and do have some interest in others like Xenogears.  i don't fell it's worth getting a cheap second-hand psx to play Grandia.  isn't that game hard to find BTW?

Anyone who wants to set up a PSX emulator, email or PM me, and I will try to get you set up.  I haven't run across a game that isn't playable on my PC yet.

The PSX is a RPG paradise.  Unfortunately though, a lot of games I propose won't be $10-20.
Here's a list of my own PSX games, with very short descriptions of each game.

Arc the Lad Collection- To me, it was well-worth the $70, but EB has it for $50 now.  three awesome Strategy RPGs
Azure Dreams- you travel into a huge randomly generated tower with monster companions.  there's some dating sim elements too
Brave Fencer Musashi- quirky little action/RPG by Square.  I still haven't finished it though.
Breath of Fire III- solid RPG, similar to the SNES BoFs
Breath of Fire IV- in the process of playing, its good
Bust-A-Move 4-  good puzzle game, but its a little too easy, and you get ridiculous combos for no apparent reason
Chocobo's Dungeon 2- eh, its kinda boring.  Ultros is indeed a boss in it though
Chrono Cross- if you don't start playing it expecting another CT, it can be decent.  too many characters
Dragon Warrior VII- I'm 90 hours into this game with a lot to go.  very long, but if you like DW, you'll love every minute of it
Ehgeiz- it sucks
Eternal Eyes- bought it for $7, and haven't really played it yet
Final Fantasy VII- I'm sure there's tons of people who'll disagree, but this game kicks ass.
Final Fantasy VIII- I have problems with the story and gameplay, but its still a good game.
Final Fantasy IX- probably the best of the PSX FFs.  must buy
Final Fantasy Anthology- FF5 & FF6 with slow loading times, and a four CG sequences.  You must own FF6 in some form though.
Final Fantasy Chronicles- FF4 hardtype & Chrono Trigger.  Only Chrono Trigger's loading times are bad, but they added anime cutscenes.
Final Fantasy Origins- very nice port of the WonderSwan remakes of FF1 & FF2.  no bad loading times at all.
Final Fantasy Tactics-  my favorite Strategy/RPG.  extremely addicting Job System
Front Mission 3- mech Strategy/RPG by Square.  Its pretty good, and very long
Grandia- some say its drags on a bit, but I really loved every minute of the game.  An epic RPG
Legend of Dragoon- haven't played it
Legend of Legaia- fighting system was pretty cool.  decent story as well
Legend of Mana- very different from SoM.  The game is mission based, with no major storyline.  I liked it, but a lot of people don't
LUNAR:SSSC- a classic.  almost my favorite game on the system.
LUNAR 2:EB-  very good, most people like it as much as the first
Mega Man 8- its usually dirt cheap, and it a traditional Mega Man game.
Mega Man Legends- at the time it came out I liked it, but I can't see playing it again
Mega Man Legends 2-haven't really touched it yet
Misadventures of Tron Bonne- its short and easy, but it was enjoyable
Parasite Eve- haven't touched it yet
Persona- these games have a cult following, but I didn't really get into this game.  I want to replay it.
Rival Schools- awesome fighter, with a lot of great characters.
Rhapsody- this RPG is hilarious.  characters will burst out into singing at times.  I love it.  Very easy though.
RPG Maker- it totally sucks.  no keyboard.  PC version is so much better
Saga Frontier- I liked this game a lot.  very unlinear.  you play the story of multiple characters.
Saga Frontier 2- I got stuck in this game.  I need to replay it.
Saiyuki: Journey West- Strategy/RPG with a good storyline.
Shadow Madness- haven't really played it much
Star Ocean 2- Awesome game.  Awesome battle system.  Tons of custimization, and building items
Suikoden- another classic RPG.  108 characters, gripping story.  A little short though.
Suikoden II- better than the first.  borrows a lot of the gameplay elements, but is easily twice as long and has a much better story.
Tales of Destiny- Great RPG, with a great battle system similar to a 2D fighting game.  Great storyline as well.
Tales of Destiny II- supposed to be called "Tales of Eternia".  Its still has the kick-ass fighting system, and rules in all other areas.
Thousand Arms- a Dating Sim/RPG.  you have to date chicks to get spell.  Its hilarious, and actually a solid RPG.
Torneko:The Last Hope- an RPG/Dungeon crawler.  if you're a masochist, you'll love it.  extremely hard.
Um Jammer Lammy- the sequel to Pa Rappa da Rappa.  very catchy songs
Vandal Hearts- short Strategy/RPG.  ridiculously gory.  decent.
Vandal Hearts II- improves on every aspect of the first one.  much harder, longer, and better.
Vanguard Bandits- a good Strategy RPG.  hilarious translation by Working Designs
Vagrant Story- Action/RPG very deep weapon/spell system.  very hard.
Wild Arms- a good RPG with some good puzzles.
Wild Arms 2- its in 3D, and worse than Wild Arms 1.
Xenogears- very long, but its story is pretty amazing.  its also hard at times, and very text-heavy
"Now we can fight to our hearts' content."
"Too bad I have to fight with you."

okay ill break it down by genre:

racing:
rally cross (steer far from rally cross 2, the original is 10 times better and its the best rally
racing game I've played in my entire life (v-rally 3 (PS2) being 2nd, and WRC (PS2) being 3rd) plus you race 3 other cars in every level which is more fun than rallying alone with the clock)
gran turismo 2 (i liked it better than gran turismo 3, better cars...)
R4 (i forget the whole title but basically it's Ridge Racer 4 and it's fun)

rpgs:
Final Fantasy 7 (the story is strong and the materia system is probably my  favorite system for upgrading and learning spells in a traditional rpg (FF Tactics is not a traditional rpg))
Final Fantasy 8 (for some reason I liked this Final Fantasy more than any other, I'd say it was the gameplay that did it for me, that and the way they presented the story, not the strongest story but presented excellent)
Chrono Cross- (has a battle system unlike any other rpg to this day, great graphics, too many characters)
Vagrant Story- (made by the makers of Final Fantasy Tactics...so you know it's good, great combat and setting)
Final Fantasy Tactics (my favorite rpg of all time, best battle system ever, great graphics, amazing story, great enemies and bosses)

FPS
Medal of Honor (the WWII setting makes it have an "original" setting for the PSX era, good enemy AI, excellent sound, and fun gameplay)
Doom (basically a port of the PC game, but it controls very good for a console shooter, and is just tons of fun, I can't remember if they put Doom 2 on the same disc...)

Flying:
Warhawk- Never much played any flying games except a demo of Warhawk, it was fun and it got excellent reviews back in the day)

Puzzle:
Super Puzzle Fighter 2 (made by Capcom and featuring Capcom characters, this is the best puzzle game I have ever played in my life by far!, extreme rarity, so if you see it spend anything they ask for it, huge collectors item too...as for me I can't find it used anywhere so I'm going to buy the GBA version and the GBA player (GCN) just to have it on the big screen)
IQ (i believe its called this, anyway its original and fun although you might want to wait for the sequel which features 2 player simultaneous)

Extreme Sports:
Tony Hawk Pro Skater (the original holds up to the test of time quite well)
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 (a little better than THPS)
Moto Racer (arcade style motocross, more fun than most motocross games today)

Action:
Resident Evil (before I owned a PS, I begged my friend to play it at his house, I was hooked from the first room explored)
Resident Evil 2 (seen as the best Resident Evil out of the PSX era, notably for it's feature of 2 different playable characters and interweiving storylines)
Resident Evil 3 (just as much fun gameplay wise as the others, little weaker in story, the Nemesis (boss/enemy) adds a twist on the old theme though)

well I know there's tons more great games but I can't think of them, hopefully my explanations gave you some insight...
