Wired gives Nintendo Wii a freaking 8 out of 10.......

More importantly what is up with those three slot like holes on the side of the Wii.  It looks like it can be opened, could it be a secret compartment to hold my lipstick and blush!?  I sure hope so...

I think you mean a 9 of 10 unless I read that chart wrong. More importantly it got ranked higher than the 360 and the PS3. That's what I call MASSIVE DAMAGE.

I don't recall seeing any screws to open the system, so maybe it's a shell/tray like thing you can pop off to open the Wii? The little hinge like things are probably feet for when the system is laying flat.
Oops pow suprise!

Those slots are for venting the system.  Simple as that.

Looking back, the vents were there at E3

I don't mind them. The legs, on the other hand, are pretty ugly. I'd put the system on it's side....but then all the lettering is sideways. You can't win!

I am putting mine on its side because I feel safer that way than putting it in its stand...it also fits better in my entertainment system that way.

Can someone tell my why systems are being pushed to be vertical?

I have always been told that increases the chance that you'll f*ck up the rotors that spin the discs.  And with the Wii have a slot-loaded mechanism, I'm thinking if anything breaks internally, it's gonna be that.

I'll keep my horizontal.  Fits better in my center too, and it'll be all nice and slick next to it's big brother Gamecube.

I'm putting it in the stand because those are the wishes of the hardware designer.  I'm a Nintendo whore, I know.

Not sure why systems are being pushed to vertical, I think maybe it's because PS2 could be vertical, and it was so popular, therefore vertical=great, right?
That's my opinion, not yours.

Well if you move the console while there was a disc inside and its spinning it will scratch the disc. If the disc drive was designed to run both positions there will be no damage to it. And technically ALL disc drives wear out do to wear and tear and there are a lot of moving parts in them.

But if it's vertical, there's gravity weighing down differently on various portions of the disk.  Whereas if it is horizontal, it's an even distribution.

Which is why I think it isn't worth the risk.

woops i got the numbers flipped around...

Anyways its funny seeing the PSP, and NGage both in the same number range.  I'm completely surprised at the score for the PS3, u think Wired would have given the PS3 +10000pts just because it has bluray.

That shouldnt matter, the weight on one side of the disk is cancelled out by the weight on the other side.  The only force the drive has to deal with is momentum, which is the same on a horizontal drive.

It's not weight I'm worried about.  It's gravity along with the speed of the disk spin.

Also, the comment about weight cancelling each other out doesn't sound right to me.  I'm not physics major but that seems like an odd statement to make.

It's not the weight on the disk, it's the weight on the rotor.  But it shouldn't damage the system in any way.

Spinning a symmetrical disk doesn't add to the effect of gravity - in this sense, Zach is right. As for gravity, they said they went to great lengths to make the disk drive sturdy enough, so I assume it's designed to handle it.

I would assume because of a DVD's resolution of 480i/p.

The weight of the disc when its verticle or whatever arguments doesn't really matter because all the lense mechanism only goes forward and back and  to its home position on a fixed path whether its in the horizontal or verticle position. The rotors and any moving will eventually die out sooner or later but thats just because of the laws of wear and tear.

Consoles on their side started with the Playstation, when the lasers wore out and the laser would become improperly aligned allot of people would then put it on its side to have gravity pull the laser. Sony probably just noticed this and decided to make it seem like its supposed to be that way. This trick allowed me to run Playstation games well after it stopped booting discs.

Actually, the vertical movement in game consoles started with the Playstation because the early systems began overheating while playing the newer games.
Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
