RUMOR: PlayStation Magazine has reported a number of unconfirmed news about the new model of PSP:

Samsung has signed a contract with Sony to supply a huge quantity of 8GB Flash storage chips, which will be incorporated into the new PSP
The 8MB storage plays a key role in downloading contents on PSP, via online or PS3
The new PSP will have a built-in camera which should have same functions as the EyeToy
Production costs of the new PSP will be lower than the current mode, because it will be slimmer and easier to produce
A new configuration for the UMD slot, the game will be inserted directly into the system
The new version of PSP is expected to launch in spring 2007

if they have yet to break even with the original PSP, and all the original users getting mad at Sony, plus all the losses PS3 and Blu-Ray will bring, I just don't see this happening........unless Sony is run by a bunch of monkeys......which could be the case....

I hope this is true for one reason. To see the reaction to the Sony fanboys who bashed Nintendo for releasing a new DS model.

My Brother sold his PSP that he got as a gift during his operation just recently. He received that near launch. The reason. Kept not seeing any games he cares about. (Right now he's playing FF:CC I have to lone him some GBA's so he can play with hie Girlfriend.)

I think this would be a smart move. Nintendo keeps its handhelds fresh with constant redesigns and refinements, if Sony can truly produce this for less than the regular PSP, and therefore at a lower price than the PSP, then good work. The only issue is, where are the games? There are a few...I'd love to play that new Ghouls n' Ghosts game, but Sony needs more than just a new version of the hardware, it's the software that sells systems.

This isn't like the DS lite where it is just getting brighter and a better form. They are adding new functionality like the camera and this memory that the orignal PSP won't have. The people that aren't buying the games for it now also won't be buying anything that uses these new features because the old psps don't have them. Also everyone with a current psp will aparrently be screwed when it comes to full ps3 connectivity.

The way it sounds the PS3 has been going lately, a PSP rerelease sounds more like something they ought to actually work on AFTER their PS3 is finalized.

Not that I care what Sony does. The redesigned PSP, if anything like the current PSP, will probably drive them closer (or further?) into bankruptcy.

I have my doubts on this rumor. Though, if it is true its a good move for Sony.

My biggest doubt is the statement that it will cost less to produce than the current PSP, because it is slimmer. That makes little to no sense. You are adding a Camera, adding an internal 8GB flash card (which aren't expensive, but not cheap either) and slimming the entire unit down.

That does not sound like it should be cheaper...unless they are going with cheaper parts and accessories.

Smart move? Haven't you seen those shipped numbers for the PSP... what would they do will all that stock?

Judging by the PSP sales vs. UMD/Game sales, isn't that about the only reason anyone's been buying it?

When I do hear about the PSP, it's always people asking how to put Super NES ROMs or downloaded videos onto them.

So it's got games and movies, but not on the UMDs that they want you to buy.

Would a harder-to-hack PSP really make people buy the UMDs instead? Someone's going to find a way to bypass everything anyway and it'll all be the same again.

But, PSP was ASKING to get hacked, having USB pluggies and memory shticks and all.
