UPS for Wii
« on: August 19, 2006, 10:16:32 AM »
You know now that I've thought about it more I but you I know what Boinked my Cube.  Bad power.  You don't think about it but over time if you don't have clean power it can really ruin things.  I use my cube alot and it acts weird now.  I know for a fact that where I live power isn't exactly consistent or clean, think power outages on clear sunny days as pretty normal.  So I'm think about getting a UPS to hook my Wii, TV, etc to.

I'm look for suggestion on how big of one and maybe anyother preventative type things that might be worth considering.

Maybe This One.
It's made by APC.  Do 900v 540 watts.  Which should cover the TV, Wii, Receiver, Switch, and DVD player.  Cheaper then it's brother because it doesn't do Phone and Ethernet, which I don't need since it won't be going to a computer.

What you want is a product made by monster cable. You can get several different kinds, they range anywhere from $80 to around $1500.
HT 800 is the cheapest they have with clean power. The higher you go up the better protection you get.

This is the one you really want. Pro 7000

Yeah but for 13 or so dollars more I could get a name brand UPS which will protect against sudden power loss.

Edit:
Welp Dang. That second one seems almost like overkill for not having a battery from what I can tell from the description.  But it must because it's 50 pounds...  That's almost 39 pounds shy of the weight of my TV.

Monster Cable = Rip Off

If you are really that concerned about it, get the cheapest one you can find.  It may only run your equipment for 5 minutes, but 5 minutes is enough time to shut down cleanly.

Monster Cable is the very definition of overkill.

I've had good experience with APC.  I'm not sure exactly how big a battery you'll need but I have an ES 725. With some price shopping I found it for about $65, and keeps my PC, cable modem, wireless router, and monitor running for about 15 mins.

I guess the only thing to note, which I didn't know at first, is that only half of the sockets have battery powered backup. So you have to prioritize your equipment so that the "essentials" are plugged into those (i.e. TV, Wii, DVD Player). Whichever unit you buy, check to make sure it has enough battery-powered sockets for the must-use equipment.
"wow."

Yeah.  I'll need at least 4 just to keep the Wii fully running when the power blinks.  (Wii, Switch, Sound, TV.)

APC is good.  Plus, Richard Brownell (the owner of gamesarefun.com works for APC.  So if you don't buy one, you hate video games.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!
