Madden NFL 07's Mass Market Mayhem...
« on: September 05, 2006, 06:22:36 PM »
So, Madden '07 is (mostly) out... and we've got Madden on the following platforms:

Game Boy Advance
GameCube
DS
Mobile Phones
PC (Windows)
PlayStation 2
PlayStation 3 (upcoming)
PlayStation Portable
Wii (upcoming)
XBox
XBox 360

This makes one game launching at about the same time on 11 different platforms.  Wow.

Can anyone think of any other games that have came close to this in the past?

Now, of course, there's games like Pac-Man which have been released on every system known to man, but that's over a 27 year period...  Not a few months spread.

Perhaps there's just a lot more things to put games on.  I mean, we've got three mostly-thriving portables (as opposed to one, maybe two).  We're right in the middle of a generational change over in a console war between three thriving companies - and having three mainstream consoles on the market at once is something new.  Then, of course, there's the entire mobile phone gaming thing... something pretty new.

I've heard developers mention that they got all 12 versions of their multiplatform game when they completed it and that was before the XC was released. I think mobile phones have like 3 different platforms.

Well, I would imagine the task of undertaking 11 different platforms is made much easier when you've been making the same game since 2000, cosmetic differences notwithstanding.

Credit where credit is due, the Hall of Fame mode in 07 is very fun (sadly my Cube broke just as I was finally settling in as a starting NT) and very new.

It's the same as 2000 in the sense that it's still football, but they've actually made some impressive advances. Not enough per year to justify annual purchases, but certainly every 2-3 years.

Will PS3 and Wii versions of Madden see stunted sales as they are launching a little later?

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

They're coming out during the season at least... if they were launching in January or something that'd be really bad for sales, as it stands I bet some people will buy them.

Considering how horrible the first Madden for a console usually is I'm likely going to settle for playing the Cube version on my Wii using backwards compatibility, and then consider getting an 08 version.

I'm still trying to grasp the idea that we have a Sports Editor...
