I wear my iPod shuffle around my neck and besides having the few songs I actually enjoy on it, it doubles as a backup device for some immensely important files.

And it will likely be my Wii memory card.

Not to mention, it would be pretty cool to have some variant of Mac OS X on the Wii...

Mr. Jack, I had absolutely no interest in an iPod, either. I've been a Mac guy all of my computer-using life. I'm 30 now, so basically it's been a good 20+ years. I've always been a supporter of all things Apple, but I just couldn't get into the iPod craze.

Part of it has to do with the fact that I'm in the music industry (I'm a Freestyle dance music producer with Total Kaos Records). I've never been a fan of MP3s, besides for preview purposes (short clips to preview an album before you run out to the record store to buy it). MP3 "trading" has hurt the music industry, overall and it's something I'll never support.

However, a few months ago, a co-worker brought her iPod to me and asked if I could add some Old School Freestyle MP3s onto it for her. I agreed and it was at that point that I fell in love with the iPod. I had never played around with an iPod before, besides display units in stores. Just the idea of being able to store a lot of music on this small device as opposed to carring a 72-CD "wallet" and CD player with me was very attractive. So as a birthday present to myself, I bought a 5th generation 30GB iPod (black) back in January. The bag I usually carry with me is substantially lighter without all of those CDs weighing it down.

While I still don't care much for MP3s, it's hard for me not to support the iPod now.

Why don't you care for MP3s now? You can have millions of them, all legally bought or ripped from CDs you own.

I prefer "CD quality" audio. Most people settle for 128kbps MP3s and for a majority of listeners, it's good enough. I can hear the compression. All of the MP3s on my iPod are ripped at 192kbps, which is much better but still not quite right (but good enough without sacrificing too much disc space). Ideally, an MP3 should be ripped at 320kbps - it's practically CD quality as the differences in the waveform is inaudible to naked ear.

In the end, I decided that settling for 192kbps was a reasonable price to pay for convenience.

192kbps is the way to go.  Anything less is poor quality, anything more isn't worth the extra space.

You might do better by ditching the iPod and going with an MP3 player that has a better signal-to-noise ratio.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!
