Controller Ports...
« on: February 12, 2005, 07:31:17 PM »
Here a thought I had lately about an idea for the next gen. It's not Nintendo specifics:

USB ports for the controllers. Yes, I know, the horrible PC/console merging sucks, I agree, but think about this. Consoles can't do certain things as well as PCs. Such as what? RTS for example. So imagine, all you have to do is plug your normal USB keyboard (most are nowadays) into your system along with your mouse and BAM. Or they can sell special specific mice, but they'd be cheap! It's just an easy way to expand controller capabilities.

What I'm thinking is plugging Rev controllers into the PC because PC controllers traditionally suck.

Hey everyone been reading this forum a lot lately and thought I'd sign up.  I definately don't see Ninty choosing to use usb ports for their controlers this next generation.  Here's why:

1.  What if the other consoles actually decided to do this?  Wouldn't it then be possible to get the controller to work on their consoles?  Definately would be something Ninty wouldn't want.

2.  Also almost all computers now have USB ports already and I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to get their "revolutionary" new controller to work on the PC.  Although this would get them more controller sales it would ultimately hurt them big time if games on the pc could or would utilize this new interface.

3.  Ninty doesn't like anything that takes extra effort to work.  As Paladin said earlier, using a USB interface could mean you would need drivers for the controllers to work.

4.  I'm not sure if this would make much of an effect on the price of the console, but wouldn't it cost a bit more to use a USB interface then use a proprietary conroller interface?

Just some food for thought.

I'm hoping that there are no controller ports at all.  I hope everything is wireless, including every controller, and all peripherals (keyboards, mice, DS/GBE connection, camera)

I actually use USB keyboards and mice (mouses? meeces?) often with my PS2. Did you guys know Silent Scope on PS2 works with a mouse? Plus, they're readily available to pretty much everyone. I'd totally support it.

I don't really care for wireless, though, I'd rather not swap batteries and keep my rumble functions.

I'm all 4 USB too, but with wireless I was thinking of rechargable lithium ion batteries(like the SP/DS/PSP) with a four plug recharger cord(so you could charge four controllers at once), it should give you atleast the same amount of playtime as a wavebird and be able to include rumble.

I like the idea of having things standardized.  Using USB gives us some options.  Nintendo doesn't have to release a keyboard or mouse themselves this way.  Devs can just make games that support it.  Where do the drivers come from?  Well I guess the best thing to do is to have several common ones built in and get others online as needed.  I don't just like this idea for controllers I want all the cables I use to hook the stuff up to be standard.  Why do I have to buy component cables from Nintendo?  That's stupid.  I should be able to use the same connections for my DVD player as I do for my console.  Most TVs have only a few places to connect stuff to.  Since I don't use everything at once I should be able to have one cable and just switch it between whatever I'm using.

If they go that way they would have some generic drivers already hard wired in and most every mouse and keyboard are compatible with the dirvers, the only thing that usally doens't work is the gimic functions.
Stupidity is lost on my. Then again I'm almost always lost.
