I have a huge gripe for the DS that I have to get off my chest
« on: January 21, 2005, 06:23:40 AM »
First, read this.

I love the DS. I love it's potential. It's enigmatic uniqueness and potential are some of the reasons I love the thing. But it's not a GB.

Now that the DS is here, it should be no doubt in anyone's mind that GBA sales will fall. Sure, it sold well during the holiday season, but you have to realize that it is going to be the last time the GBA sails well.

When the next GB comes out, DS sails will fall. And since GB is not a DS, it won't be backwards compatible with the DS. So that means goodbye DS, goodbye potential. We'll just go back to playing games the "normal" way again.

I don't care if GBE has GameCube graphics, I don't want the DS to crumble. And I say that the next protable Nintendo makes should be a GB DS, possibly with GCN graphics, and a much better design.

Nintendo could create 2 development kits for developers: 1 kit allows developers to utilize all the functions of the hendheld, whereas the other allows them to only use 1 screen without all the features.

Isn't that more of a gripe about the next Gameboy then the DS?  But I wouldn't worry too much anyway, I honestly believe Nintendo made those comments about working on a new "traditional" Gameboy to keep the press from proclaiming "Nintendo is doomed!" just because the DS isn't as powerful as the PSP.  The DS is proving to be fairly successful so far, and I think that if that success continues, Nintendo will continue to produce new types of handheld systems like the DS instead of going back to a traditional system.
That's my opinion, not yours.

IF the GBE in fact doesn't have the second screen or touchscreen, that's all it won't it. There's no way Nintendo won't include wifi, stereo speakers, the microphone, GBA slot, etc. Heck it will probably have a touchscreen too. That will probably be a standard. The PSP would be that much cooler with a touchscreen. The only thing DS has that GBE won't have is the second screen, and who knows, maybe the GBE will have a second screen.

But then again, if Nintendo is making the GBE into a portable GCN, it will definately be more like a PSP. Except better, since the GBE will already have a huge library of GCN games.

I'm still amused Nintendo had the utter stupidity to even mention the next Game Boy before the freakin' DS was out.

Gamefreak, I like the idea you have for the GBE. If they make it into a portable GC, that would be so awesome. My only request if they go that way is to put in a widescreen LCD.

Well you could look at it another way.........

Just because the next GB comes out doesn't mean the DS will fall.

If the DS falls after the next GB comes out atleast you can do is still play the games for it, or go back and buy all the hit games for extremely cheap prices like the N64.

I was shocked to see Perfect Dark advertised for $10 at Target................

raptorspike, it's not my idea, it's Nintendo's. They ARE in fact trying to make the GBE into a portable GCN. In fact, the DS was supposed to be a portable GCN...
Well short history lesson:
During N64 era, Nintendo made these prototype handhelds, codenamed "Nitro." They were supposed to be the successor to the Game Boy line. However the project got canned. Now, fast forward to when the GCN is about to launch. Nintendo plans on making a new handheld with the intention of making it a portable GCN to be launched sometime after the GCN. However pretty quickly they realize they still won't be able to make a profit off such an expensive handheld. So they instead resurrect the Nitro platform, power it up and add all those features and release it as the DS. However apperently work on the GBE is farther along that most think, and it seems Nintendo is once again trying to make the GBE into a portable GCN. And at this point in time they should easily be able to make it affordable (the psp did it after all).

Ninty hasn't announced anything confirming the next Gameboy...All they ever say is that they are always thinking about their next systems, just to get ideas into the pot...

By the time the GBE is released the, DS will have at least 3 years to its lifetime, and will have a totally new identity for itself... right now its N64 games with Wireless and Touchscreen and the two screens... by the GBEs release the games will be radically diffferent, developers will be fully using two screens as its standard.

The GBE is coming, its cracy to believe that Nintendo will continue to sell the GBSP. It all depends on how good the PSP does. If it does badly, the GBE will be released 2007, maybe even 2008. If the PSP does very well, then Nintendo will be pressed to release it sooner. Either way, the GBASP's Life Cycle will end sooner rather than later.  Heck the GB didnt last that long, we had the GB Pocket, GB Color, GB Pocket Color

The whole point of calling it a Third Pillar is in fact, that its a third pillar. Home Consoles... The Game Boy Line and the DS Line....  Theres a reason why the DS isnt called Game Boy DS

Also dont forget, the DS is made to atract Nintendo fans and Non Gamers... the GB is strictly for the Nintendo Hardcore fans

It's not called the Gameboy DS because SP's are still selling like crazy (if the Playstation 3 is released now, PS2 sales will DIE) and because Nintendo doesn't want anything to happend to the GameBoy name with a risky product.

Bill, um, no one said Nintendo announced anything That doesn't mean stuff doesn't get out. You won't hear much of it on the main sites cause they won't post rumors unless they are really major, even though many of these rumors are from solid sources and are pretty much on the right track.

lol DS is for non gamers and GB is for hardcore fans? haha yeah in the minds of deranged Nintendo executives. Go look around, most people buying DS are hardcore Nintendo fans and the vast majority of GB owners (almost 200 million people) are NOT in any way "hardcore" unless you consider little 7 year olds playing Yu-Gi-Oh hardcore Nintendo gamers. If you erase all hardcore Nintendo fans from existence the DS sales will easily halve... or more.

Well I haven't seen any so called "retired gamers" or non gamers toting DS's around. The people buying DS's are gamers, and everyone knows the GB does so well is because everyone has one, even if they play games for like an hour or two a month.

Yeah but have they bought DS's? I'm sure I could get anyone to have a blast with any game, be it on PC, DS, or Xbox. And i'm not saying non-gamers won't buy them. My cousins bought a DS and they don't really play much outside of a few PS2 and famous PC games. But anyway I think Nintendo's just being stupid thinking DS will attract "non-gamers" or crap like that. So what, your grandma is going to buy a DS? If your a guy and you're under 30 there's a 99% chance you play games to some extent. And there are plenty of girls in that age range that play games to certain extents too. The only people I can think of that never play games at all are pretty old people who still haven't gotten into games, and there aren't much of them either. I can't see my English teacher picking up a DS. The GBA SP is still far more universally attractive to non-gamers than the DS..

yeah but Non Gamers are interested in it... and thats good... The other day i was eating a pizza and in the other table the parents were all using the kids DS. and talking about it and playing it... Poor Kid didnt get it back  I thought it was funny...

When i bust the DS out alot of people who arent gamers ask about it... the touch screen is a conversation piece IMO

Yeah it is a cool gadget... if only it was more powerful It's not like CPU's are expensive... it would take them like 5 more dollars to get a 166 Mhz main CPU instead of the 66 Mhz...

And it would more than halve battery life so you'd need to add 20-30 at least for a better battery.

Have you read the articles? DS is attracting lots of people [in Japan] who have never been into games.

Lol your kidding right? DS only uses a slightly more expensive battery than the DS, and look at all that stuff it has to compared to the DS. Adding 100 Mhz won't kill the battery. And Nintendo can take a freaking hit in hardware for once. It's not like their short on cash or something. They have to be aggressive and make sacrifices. And even with the slightly more expensive battery and extra 100 Mhz it will still have much more life than PSP AND Nintendo will still probably manage to make money off of every DS, while Sony is losing more than MS did with Xbox, and that's with internal manufacturing.
