I'm in the market for a good portable MP3 player. I've wanted one for quite some time, but couldn't justify the purchase price. However, the CD player in my car is beginning to die, and--instead of replacing it--I'm considering getting a portable MP3 player and hooking it up through the tape deck to listen to in my car.
I suppose the first question would be does anyone have any MP3 player recommendations? Right now the two I'm considering the most are the
20 Gig iPod and the
20 Gig Sony Network Walkman. I've also looked into the Dell DJ, the Creative Labs Nomad and Creative Labs Zen, but none of them seem to have the oomph that Apple's and Sony's offerings have.
Sony's having a
sale at its website where you can get the 20 Gig NW for $300--the same price as the 20 Gig iPod. The extra battery life looks nice, and I don't really have a problem with the ARTAC3 format issue. However, after hearing about so many problems with PS2's dying left and right, I'm a little concerned about the quality of the workmanship. I have a Sony TV and a Sony DVD player, and both work great.
Second question would be does anyone know how much sound quality is lost when you play a MP3 player through a tape deck adaptor? I've also looked into FM transmitters, but I've heard lots of bad things about them.
Third question: while doing some research online I've read some people bring up the issue that in the future Sony might come out with a firmware/software update that would allow MP3 files on its Network Walkman. If I understand correctly, they mean there would be an update to the current model that would allow MP3's to play in addition to ARTAC3 files. Is this correct, or am I misreading something?
Thanks for any help.
