Mario Power Tennis Teaches the Basics, Then Hammers All the Rules

The keys to winning a tennis match in the real world are fast footwork, consistency and a wicked backhand. Enter the realm of Mario Power Tennis(tm) , exclusively for Nintendo GameCube(tm), and the secret to winning includes Power Shots like Mario's Iron Hammer, Luigi's Squeaky Mallet and Peach's Super Peach Spin.

Thrills abound in the new Mario Power Tennis video game, launching today. Up to four players can compete on a single screen as they show off thunderous backhands or return soaring lobs. From Mario(tm) to Bowser, each character has unique offensive and defensive Power Shots that turn a friendly game of tennis into mania on the court.

Tennis purists can play a standard game without fancy trick moves, a feature that also lets novices learn the basics before moving on to more advanced action. A series of mini-games and special modes let players hone their tennis skills while competing in a variety of crazy challenges.

Mario Power Tennis, Rated E for Everyone, sells at an MSRP of $49.99.

It's a reference to the movie "You Got Served", which has one of the funniest titles ever.  I bet that's how most people were feeling when they left the theater.  My friends and I joke about this movie so much that one of them bought me its movie poster as a joke gift, and now it's on my wall with weird encouraging comments from some of the actors/dancers in the credits.

These days saying "you got served" is a bit above saying "all your base are belong to us" (or variations thereof, RIGHT NINTENDO?) on the lameness scale.

Thankies! *o*

It's in celebration of getting Mario Power Tennis today. The EBgames guy called my cell in the middle of Chem lecture, and my professor's like "LET ME ANSWER IT! C'MON!"  I turned it off, promptly.

I managed to live to see this day. OH THE JOY.

To test the old mechanics, I played against a "Pro" level Mario in a 1-set (best of 3 games) match, no powershots, with my tried-and-true Daisy in my very first time experiencing the game.

1st try:  I got whooped.  And I'm like, "WHATEVERR!"

2nd try:  Mario wins in a tie-breaker.  Ack.

3rd try:  Mario wins a tie-breaker, again.  GRRRR.

4th try:  KILLED MARIO!!  &$#@%.  Won 2 straight games.  2nd game at 40-Love.

Moving my character felt noticeably different from the first game, but it didn't take long to adjust, and I was back in action.  The classic play mechanics carried over nicely.  IT WAS INTENSE.

The lighting/shadows from the varying day/sunset/evening times looked great, and the fluidity is pure sweetness.  The original ran at 20fps, but this new one is 60fps, which not only means it's nice to look at, you've got 3X the frame-accuracy for more precise ULTIMATE GAMEPLAY.

The game box even says it's a "BEST SELLER," ROCK ON!  GOOD WAY TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE IT'S WORTH MR. AVERAGE-CUSTOMER-PASSERBY'S TIME.

And of course, we now have 100X teh Daisy!

I love this game.

I'm gonna be playing it for a long, long time... a whole week, actually, until a certain other game comes out.
