Nintendo DS's Abillity to Download to multiple DS's?
« on: October 26, 2004, 05:41:23 PM »
I was very excited about this offering at first, but then I got a dreaded thought:  What if this is a repeat of the GBA's short-lived and rarely used abillity to send weak versions of the game so you can play multiplayer?

I hope to God that Nintendo will allow the entire game to be sent to people within your range.  The reason why I can see this not happening is simply because when people run their DS's on-line, it would be possible not only to play games for free, but people could easily "snatch" the DS game as it's being sent, allowing unforseen pirating abillities.

I don't mind only the multiplayer-side being able to be sent, but for the love of God, make it the entire multiplayer, in its entirety.

Can anybody help me sleep at night by letting me know?

You're in luck, games look as if they will be entirely "transferred" for multiplayer.  Ping Pals, for example, will only need one copy and up to 16(?) people can chat at one time.

I think I should note that I think your idea of transferring games is faulty though.  If a multiplayer game is being transferred, it is only the multiplayer aspects being transferred, not the game in its entirety.  (I don't know if that's very clear...)

Plenty clear, thank you.

It still would be nice to transfer even the single-player game to a friend so you can both be playing simutaneously.  The downside would be your friend cannot save, and only can play the game while your DS is still on and inside of his range.  It would be better than having your friend hunch over your shoulder.

You've answered my question pretty well, so I think I can rest easy for a while.  My "wish" is that every multiplayer DS game would have this abillity, but I bet a few lower-end titles would be sure to be missing the abillity.

I now have a seperate question(just let me know if I should probably create another thread), how exactly do you see the list of game demos/downloadable games/videos in the DS's download range?  I.e. You walk into Block Buster, and the DS server inside is sending out game demos, but your friend inside Block Buster wants you to try a game he just rented.  How do you determine what you're going to download and play?

Thanks.

The dev decides what's being sent and if the dev decides they'll make more money by essentially limiting multiplayer to a demo unless everybody buys one copy there's little you can do.

Edfishy: The DS' bootup menu allows you to select what you want to do, play the DS or the GBA game, grab a game off the air, etc. Obviously you can select which game you'd like downloaded.
