GBA-games using touchscreen?
« on: October 08, 2004, 01:39:14 PM »
I was looking through the videos of the Japanese NDS press conference on Gamespot when I discovered something odd. In between the videos for NDS games, there was a video for a GBA game running on the NDS. The video showed someone at the press conference inserting the Pokemon Leaf Grean cartridge into the system and switching it on. After clicking a few times there are a number of Pokemon on both screens. After picking Picachu, it looks like you could draw on Picachu's picture using the touchscreen. Gamespot didn't have any text or newsitem to go with the video except "This movie shows how the Nintendo DS can be used to customize your Pokemon." and the whole video is in Japanese and it's difficult to see what's going on the screen, so I'm not sure if you need a certain DS game to do this, but it looks like GBA-games can use some of the functionality of the NDS. It hasn't been mentioned on any other site either. You can find the video here. Watch the video labeled "Nintendo DS Demonstration". Does anyone know exactly what is going on in the video?

This is Awesome - O. It's just like the other GB systems. Remember the legend of zelda games that where on GB but if u played them on gba u could unlock new stuff? Nintendo always do this with their handheld systems (or at least at the start ) And what about the gb games that added color on ur gbc system? This for me  is just  another reason to buy the DS.

Cool.  So hopefully if Pokemon LG/FR can detect the DS and vice versa Nintendo won't have us buy and collect our Pokemon collections over again.  Since LG/FR is programmed to work with the DS already it should be able to transfer its Pokemon to Pokemon DS.  Well "should" from a practical user-friendly design point of view.  Obviously in regards to greed it might not have that option.  Hopefully the wireless connection should still work too.

Ruby/Sapphire might not work but that's not that big of a deal since you can transfer Pokemon from those to LG/FR.  That's still better than before when it was impossible to transfer our old Pokemon.

ok call me heretic, but Ive never played a pokemon game...so i have a question, can you catch every single one of them in recent versions, or you can only catch the old ones in the old versions?

You can catch every single Pokemon using only Ruby/Sapphire/Leaf Green/Fire Red/Colloseum.

GBA games can use the touchscreen if they are programmed with touchscreen-capable gameplay. Games in the GBA slot are cabable of utilizing everything that games in the DS slot can utilize, it just depends on the software. So if someone wanted to, they could make a GBA game that also has optional features for players using a DS like a touchscreen control option, a control scheme using four face buttons, or support for wireless multiplayer on the DS's frequency and for more than just 4 players.

Of course, I'm not sure about what Nintendo would feel about this as it may alienate GBA users...Why would you want to play such-and-such on GBA when it's so much cooler to play it on DS? But then again, if you bought Perfect Dark and didn't have the N64 upgraded RAM, then you were screwed. And who's going to stop developers from putting in extra features for DS owners? Not everyone has a GBA-GCN cable but there are plenty of games with extra features just for those people.

By the way, there is a new Pokemon rpg in the works for DS. They are called Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Thought you'd like to know since no one here seems to know yet...
