Nintendo Gaming / The Super Smash Obscurities Discussion
« on: August 31, 2007, 04:47:45 PM »
This is a topic that is to discuss the possibilities of the inclusion of lesser known characters into the game's roster. I will post a character's profile and then we can discuss both the character's likelihood of being included as well as what the character brings to the table(unique gameplay, movesets or unique themes). I'll get the first two profiles up to get the conversation started.

Super Smash Obscurity Profile #1

Name: Takamaru
Game: Nazo no Murasamejou(Mystery of Murasame Castle)
Platform: Famicom Disk System
Release: 1986
Regions: Japan

Game Info: Mystery of Murasame Castle was a top down action game. It ran off a screen by screen non-scrolling game engine that was quite similar to The Legend of Zelda. However, Murasame was linear and had a greater focus on heated action than Zelda did. It was produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and had a soundtrack by legendary Nintendo composer Koji Kondo. Much like how Kid Icarus was Metroid's sister title, Mystery of Murasame Castle was the sister title to Zelda. The two were often cross promoted with joint merchandise such as keychains featuring both Link and Takamaru or soundtrack LPs that featured arrangments of the main themes for both games. The original title has also been ported a few times over the years such as the 2004 GBA release as part of the Famicom Mini line. The game also makes a cameo appearance in Pikmin 2.

Character Info: Takamaru is a samurai charged with the task of infiltrating 5 castles in Edo era Japan and taking out each of the castle's lords who had become possessed by demons. He has many abilities including a mastery of Japanese sword fighting, throwing kunai, hurling a powerful fire wave, deflecting projectile attacks with his sword and turning invisible for short periods of time. Takamaru had 3 mentions on Sakurai's character poll.

Super Smash Obscurity Profile #2

Name: Stafy
Game: Densetsu no Stafy(Legend of Stafy) series
Platform: GameBoy Advance, Nintendo DS
Release:2002-2006
Regions: Japan

Game Info: The Legend of Stafy series was originally developed by Tose best known to Nintendo fans probably for having developed Super Princess Peach. The games are a series of platformers fairly similar to the Kirby series in terms of feel and level design. The first game was originally planned for the GameBoy Color but was cancelled when the announcment of the GBA was made. The game ended up being restarted for that platform instead. The series for some reason has remained Japan only for the time being. It was rumored that Nintendo of America had considered releasing Stafy 4 for the DS in the US but nothing had come of it. Perhaps Sakurai could use Smash to build interest for the franchise worldwide much like Melee did for Fire Emblem and we can finally see a worldwide release for the series.

Character Info: Stafy is a starfish(or perhaps a real star) and is a pretty easy-going fellow. He hangs around with his sister Stapy and his friend the clam, Kyorosuke. Stafy is oftentimes the butt of a lot of physical humor and gags. Stafy made cameo appearances in both Super Princess Peach and Mario & Luigi Super Star Saga. The following videos will do a good job of highlighting some of Stafy's abilities.

Hopefully, we can get some good Takamaru and Stafy discussion going until I finish the third profile!

How is a video game->video game reimagining analogous to a book->movie adaption?

Your name is appropriate. I've owned every Nintendo system ever, so I don't think the problem is 'retro gaming', thank you very much. The problem is that the selection of N64 and SNES games is paltry at best, horrid at worst.  At this rate of 1 good SNES a month or less we'll have about 50-60 good SNES games in 5 years. Half of the games worth having or less.

One good SNES game a month? Dude, there are already 11 SNES games up within a roughly five month period and they all range from good to excellent. Most are really great games. While I can see one taking a pass on Street Fighter II in favor of waiting for either Super Street Fighter II or Street Fighter II: Turbo or in hopes that maybe we'll get the arcade versions one day. That still averages out to around 2 good SNES games a month.

1. Alien Crush
2. Beyond Oasis
3. Bomberman '93
4. Bonk's Adventure
5. Chew Man Fu
6. Comix Zone
7. Contra III
8. Donkey Kong Country
9. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
10. Dragon's Curse
11. Ecco the Dolphin
12. Excitebike
13. F-Zero
14. Gunstar Heroes
15. Kid Icarus
16. Kirby's Adventure
17. Mario Kart 64
18. Military Madness
19. New Adventure Island
20. R-Type
21. R-Type III
22. Ristar
23. Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV
24. Sim City
25. Soldier Blade
26. Solomon's Key
27. Sonic the Hedgehog
28. Star Fox 64
29. Streets of Rage
30. Super Castlevania
31. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
32. Super Mario 64
33. Super Mario Bros.
34. Super Mario World
35. Super Star Soldier
36. Tecmo Bowl
37. The Legend of Zelda
38. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
39. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
40. Toe Jam & Earl
41. Wario's Woods

The above 41 games are all generally well regarded and are all already up on the Virtual Console. Unless you've downloaded all of the above and have played through them to completion I see no reason to complain. Especially when you consider that we still have 3 Mondays left in April and that we're likely to see Zelda II, Punch Out!!, Wonderboy in Monster World, Vectorman, Legend of the Mystical Ninja and Bonk's Revenge before the month is over. The Virtual Console already has a better line-up than many consoles have in their entire lives and it's not even been six months yet.

In Japan Master Higgens is named Takahashi Meijin and is based on a real life person, Toshiyuki Takahashi. While I know that currently he is the CEO of Hudson, I don't believe that he worked at the company back in '86 when Takahasi Meijin was created. I'm sure that back then he was just a famous celebrity gamer who was known for his mad button mashing skills.

Remember folks, that a Wii with Dragon's Curse downloaded onto it is a chick magnet. So, if you're looking to land a woman download it when it goes up.

HELL YEAH!!!

It seems as if Hudson is releasing Dragon's Curse as the next Turbo/PCE game to hit the VC next Monday on April 2!

Wonderful Wonderful game! THIS is what the Virtual Console is all about. I really want to see this game reach a wider audience than the Master System/Turbografx's general unpopularity held it back from. I firmly believe that had this game been released on the NES it would be remembered as a classic game up there with MegaMan2, Castlevania etc.

It's sort of a cross between Super Mario Bros., Zelda and Metroid.

Well, the next Genny game going up is Beyond Oasis which I think more than makes up for the Sword or Vermillion/Sonic Spinball 1-2 punch of mediocrity. That game is an excellent Adventure/Action RPG.

Also up are Zelda II: The Adventure of Link which is of course for NES and Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV for SNES. This is in addition to Excite Bike and Splatterhouse which have been sitting on the server and not put up.

Which 3 or 4 of the above 5 games will come out Monday? Well, we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm really waiting for Landstalker though which has yet to be submitted by Sega to the ESRB or released in another territory. At least I know Wonderboy in Monster World is coming as it's been announced for a March release in Japan. That gives me hope that at least maybe it'll be out in NA by April or May. I'm also frothing at the mouth for Hudson to get Dragon's Curse up. It's been submitted to the ESRB so it's definitely on the way it's just a question of when.  That's my absolute most wanted Turbo game. Speaking of Hudson they recently announced/submitted to the ESRB Hagane for the SNES which means that some of Hudson's non Turbo games will be hitting the VC(Meaning maybe Bomberman 64, Mega Bomberman and the SNES Bonk games etc).

I'm also curious as to whether we'll ever see any third party Genesis and Turbografx games.  I could defintely go for Konami to release Rocket Knight Adventure, Sparkster(Along with the SNES one), Bloodlines and Contra: Hard Corps(The best Contra ever. Though being a Nintendo fansite I'm sure most will disagree with that.).

Really, it's a stab in the back after so many fond years (2 generations!) of having a left-analog taking priority over the D-pad by being designed to naturally line-up with your thumb.

BURN IT

BURN IT

BURN IT

With 4 systems vs. 1 where the D-Pad is the only one supported, of course it should be given greater importance and placed in that position. N64 games look like they'll play terribly on the controller anyway which is why I'm hoping there will be a replica N64 controller and then I'd that and then use the classic controller for the other systems' supported games. I really wish the classic controller would've had 6 face buttons. It would've made a number of other supported games a possibility without the need for another controller and wouldn't have crippled N64 controls nearly as much.

Also, Hudson has already confirmed PC-Engine CD games will be supported on VC though it wasn't specified whether that included Super CD-Rom titles too. I would hope so since that's where the majority of great PC-Engine software was as opposed to the Hu-Cards and regular CD games.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:What do you want in Smash Bros. Revolution?
« on: April 25, 2006, 09:39:44 PM »
As far as characters go, I'd like to see

Wario
9-Volt
Ashley
Jill
Andy
Ivan or Mia
Pit
Little Mac
Alice(Balloon Kid)
Takamaru
Goku & Chamu
Starfi
Stanley the Bugman
Classic Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.

I want to see this game do things that make it feel fresh and new and not just SSBM with prettier graphics. Perhaps a shift to being fully 3D with the Freehand Controller capabilities would allow many great new ideas to be implemented.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:NEW Super Mario Bros. Title?
« on: March 08, 2006, 12:24:00 PM »
New Super Mario Bros. is probably the best possible name they could come up with for what they want to achieve.

Super Mario Bros. DS is too close to Super Mario 64 DS(The Super Mario Advance games don't help with this much either) which was a revamped version of an older Mario title. This creates the connatation that Super Mario Bros. DS is a remake of the original Super Mario Bros. Coming up with a logical subtitle is also hard since there isn't much to work with. We already know the story is the princess is kidnapped by Bowser yet again, there's not much you can do with that to create a clever subtitle. Also, creating a subtitle like Super Mario Bros Double Sized ( As well as the suggested in this thread, Super Mario Bros 2006 Edition) or something of the sort just goes back to feeling like a remake rather than a new game. I've heard people suggest that it should be called Super Mario Bros. Adventure or Super Mario Bros. Legends and this just makes it sound like another Mario RPG game and not a new platformer. Super Mario Bros. Neo has been thrown around by fans and while it's not quite as obnoxious as say Super Mario Bros. Xtreme or Super Mario Bros. Hardcore, it nevertheless doesn't sound very Mario-ish and doesn't fit very well. It'd work well for Mega Man but not Mario.

Ultimately the reason why this name is best for Nintendo is because it's not targeted at you or me. Nintendo knows we'll buy this game no matter what it's called just on virtue of it being a new Mario sidescroller from EAD. Nintendo isn't just releasing software in void for only us traditional gamers anymore. Nintendo's strategy with both the DS and Revolution is about appealing to us, older drop-out gamers and people who never played games much at all before if ever. It's these later two groups who this title is targeted towards. Do you really have any idea how many people played the original Super Mario Bros. but never followed up with any of the subsequent games in the franchise? There a many, many, many people who have because everybody played Super Mario Bros. back then. Your mom played it, your dad played it even your uncle with the funny haircut and beer breath played it. It was a game like Pong and Pac-man before it and Tetris since it's release, managed to penetrate the general populace in ways games like GTA, Madden etc. could only dream of. It's meant to stir memories and emotions in those people, to make them say, "Hey, they made a new Super Mario Bros.! I used to love that game!". Then at the very least, pick it up and look at the back of the box and check it out if not outright buy it.

I think it's more along the lines of Nintendo making certain first party games available for free.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:What type of games should the Rev launch with?
« on: April 12, 2005, 12:28:15 PM »
At Launch

First and Second Party Titles

New Super Mario Bros
Super Smash Bros Online
New game that starts a new franchise for Nintendo which either is very appealing to the American market(GTA or Halo) or is equally appealing to both US and Japanese markets (RE or MGS).  Having Retro work on this title would be a great idea. Online play for this title would also be huge plus.
Camelot RPG. We know one is in develpment, they just need to hopefully have it finished and localized in time for the US launch.

Third Party Titles

Namco: New Ridge Racer or Soul Calibur IV
Capcom: Resident Evil 5, a new Viewtiful Joe, or if they can reinvent the series to take advantage of what the Revolution offers, then Mega Man 9 or Street Fighter IV.
Konami: Since the Castlevania team is tied up right now with two new titles, a new CV is unlikely for launch. I'd say instead they should go for a new reinvention of the Contra series. Maybe toss in a Winning Eleven in there for good measure.
Sega: New Sonic game. It's Sega's best selling franchise and is the game that would be most beneficial to Nintendo in regards to helping drive Revolution sales.
Square-Enix: Some new FF VII related game.
And of course the typical EA Sports and new Tony Hawk games that we see pretty much on every system.

Post Launch

For the next six months after launch Nintendo should have a reinvention of an old classic series released(Punch-Out being an easy one to develop) along with something else like a Wario Ware game. By the end of the first year they also need to have a new Metroid and yet another new big  franchise starting game available. By the end of the second they should try and have another Camelot RPG, another reinvention of an old abandoned Nintendo franchise(Perhaps Kid Icarus this time around), possibly a sequel to the new franchise game that the system launched with and a new Zelda. For third party support, they defintely need Dragon Quest IX on the system even if it's not exclusive, just so long as it makes an appearance on the Revolution. Same for GTA.

Here is an acumulation of what I feel is important info on Next gen controllers including the new pics of the NextBox controller which has shoulder buttons above its triggers and a track ball in the center of the controller (why did they not put the track ball in the place of the dpad?).  Too bad it does not have mouse scroll wheels where the new shoulder buttons are.

Well, the site that originally posted those pics seem to think that it's a power on/off switch for the controller and not a trackball. That would make more sense given the placement.
