Looking at that release list there's like more decent PSP launch games then there were DS launch games period.  And who would have thought that Sony, who had one first party PS2 launch title, would release more launch titles than Nintendo did?  That's 9 first party titles, none of which are ports (though ATV could be).  The DS might not even have 9 first party titles by the end of the year.  Sure Sony isn't nearly as great as Nintendo is at making games but they're bringing the content and they're filling in the genres.  If they can make 9 games Nintendo should be able to make at least 4.  The weak lineup of the DS is completely inexcusable.

Although I still abide by quality over quantity, there is a breaking point... although I haven't reached it yet, I'm not surprised that many people are. Mario 64 DS as the only first party title is really, really upsetting. At the very least, though, we have your classic sig to look at...

Not an excuse, but a reason for the DS' scant library: Nintendo put the machine out to market early.

Again, not an excuse -- a reason. And in my opinion, an unacceptable one. For me, it's alright -- three games and the GBA library can tide me over for a long time. But for public perception -- awful. Had they delayed the DS launch for a few more months, it too could have launched with more than six games (and six more during week two). Instead, we're left waiting for Wario Ware Touched (which, after playing the Japanese version, I respectfully disagree that it "ain't going to do it." Unless we're talking strictly about sales numbers. You know the mass market will go for style over substance any day of the week, unfortunately.)

I love my DS, but I'm still really, really upset with the software heads up at the Big N.

xts:

Before you start accusing me of being stupid with my comparison, take a look in the freaking mirror. Read my post again.

You stated, gamers follow games, not systems. I made the comparison to illustrate the opposite point (that you're simply helping me make): gamers do follow systems, and not always the games. With the better Dreamcast launch, it still failed, because people followed the PS2 as a system and not for the games. People followed the Cube for its Nintendo name, even though Wind Waker and Mario weren't there yet. The Dreamcast launch had great games, yet people did not latch onto the system.

It is the act of following a system that can allow the games to trickle down.

Just for your info XTS, the cutscenes in RE4 are real-time renderings -- not FMVs... As game technology progresses, I believe that the emphasis on Full-Motion video will be less and less -- graphics will get good enough -- perhaps are good enough -- to not need full-motion. If we're fortunate, that means much more space for OTHER things, not wasteful FMVs.

Gamers follow systems as much if not more than they follow games. Please tell me, what system sellers came out for the PS2 at launch -- and what system sellers came out for the Dreamcast? Which one died?

Jonny, absolutely excellent points. I stumbled on this after I wrote a somewhat similar rant on my website (shameless plug http://www.trigames.net/articles.php?content_id=265), moreso about Iwata not giving gamers here what they want ("mature" titles, online, "sweeping stories" etc..)... I really, really hope that NOA cries "Give Us Free", and that they get it. (Like the Lox from Bad Boy Records...)

The way NCL treats NOA isn't like an "American division" but more like an "American office". It's as if NOA is just a small office for pushing product along to the American market. It has almost no autonomy, and for all of its understanding of the American market (because hey -- the "A" in NOA stands for "America"), it's not allowed to capitalize on it. Jon, I don't interact with NOA or NCL on any level, I'm just a bummy fan, but I understand the turmoil here. Please, PLEASE make sure the heads over at NOA see this, it's a great wake-up call.

I think it was an apology moreso for the fact that he had posted the wrong thing at first (it used to say "...a reworked version of FFIII (FFVI) has never seen North American shores" or something to that effect), but again as he said he as awake till a$$ o'clock, so posting errors will happen...

I get giddy thinking about a steering wheel on the touch screen, operated much in the same way as you use your thumb with an iPod, as an interpretation of their "true analog steering" statement. *giddies*

You sure it's not the original NES FFIII, remade? Because a "remade" FF III/VI did indeed see face time on the Playstation. I'm a wee bit confused.

"According to Akitoshi Kawazu of Square-Enix, the company is planning to do a port of Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS. This is not the FFIII that saw release on the Super NES, but rather the Famicom edition that has still yet to see the light of day outside of Japan. A release date has yet to be determined." -Nintendojo.com

Outkast isn't Def Jam... nice job EA, sullying OutKast's name with Def Jam's mediocre label. C-N-N is Capone-N-Noreaga and they never will be gifted.

No, I'm assuming it comes with the package. I guess I should have said, "It is capable of" instead of "It will also support". Also, there is voice recognition in the DS via a built-in microphone.

Just watched the Nintendo Conference thru Gamespot Live. I'm putting up a transcript now on our site (trigames.net) as best as I can transcribe it, but from what I've seen, the DS is indeed that model that was shown in USA Today. They showed an awesome looking Metroid on the bottom screen with an accompanying map on the top screen. The quality was hard to judge because I was watching it through a blotchy, compressed video stream. But it looked almost as good as the Cube version. It could possibly have been an FMV super-imposed on the bottom screen, but the speaker said that the game would be playable on demo DS's tomorrow, Wednesday the 12th. He also noted how you would use the stylus or your finger to point where you wanted Samus to shoot. The crowd erupted when they saw this, although it wasn't the first nor last time they would cheer in ecstasy.

The DS will support local 100 ft area network, I think that's what the Blue Tooth refers to, but I'm not sure. It will also support Wi Fi access, piggybacking on internet technologies. Browsing and such, I dunno, but I know they were touting it for game use and communication. The "instant messaging" appears to simply be the ability to talk to other DS users using your stylus to write and draw pictures.

Something a friend of mine wanted me to post about this "game":

"As a person, I see it as a poor attempt at entertainment. As a black man I'm just saddened by the misrepresentation of the race and our generation. Such is life, the worst stereotypes are the ones that make it onto the biggest media and cultural outlets. In the end, I personally choose not to get terribly angry because I feel that by working on being a better individual I'll do my best to refute the steroetype and break out of the box these corporate think tanks want to put me in. "Check out the more popular games. They feature great stories and graphics. Not simple graphics and no stories."

Yeah, and since when does "popular" mean "good?" What about, great stories and graphics, but no gameplay? Although I felt that ED had good gameplay, I was worried about Dyack's insistence that story is the reason to play games. I may be mistaken, and if I am I apologize, but I remember reading a quote from him saying that the reason gamers play games is to flesh out a story. I'm a gamer, and I have been for 17 years, and I've never liked a game where the quality of story and gameplay are inversely proportional, Denis. So as great a job as you've done w/ Nintendo, I can't disagree with you more.

"See? This is why I hate new, casual gamers."

This is disgusting. Along with using "blingin' ice" (read: overly gaudy jewelry) to increase the respect you get in Def Jam Vendetta 2 (as if jewelry is ALL that warrants respect among young black males), I hope EA rots in hell.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Reveals "Third Pillar"!
« on: January 22, 2004, 09:15:41 AM »
Um, there's a little thing called screen real estate which means if you do a split screen, you'll be squished into a tiny corner or half of a screen which is ALREADY small considering we're talking about a portable. So if you're saying that we should just stick to the regular GBA and split the screen... *no.* If you're saying they should just get one big screen, well I dunno. Maybe, maybe not. People are hypothesizing one ARM processor controls one screen, so imagine what advantages this will have over one big screen.

I'm still disappointed though. Mainly for this whole "third pillar" thing and whether or not this is a smart business move (dammit I actually own stock. I'm losing $. my own fault for buying though.)

With EA's financial backing I'm sure they could license the real cars, perhaps that's the reason they changed publishers. Acclaim was in financial trouble for a while there last year and they still might be, I'm not sure.

Of course, I have no idea how licensing real cars works; it might be more than just paying money, or it might not have anything to do with money at all, so who knows...

Not excited.

Yet.

I admit to being disappointed, as it sounds from first impressions that Nintendo said, "Heeey! Dude, we've got... TWO... screens! That's like, DOUBLE of one!" In short, sounds like a gimmick at first.

With everyone's ideas, this could turn into something better... for once, I am going to hold my breath -- but I can't help but be disappointed at first. I won't judge though.

I like the idea that someone pointed out -- including that mock-up art -- of the device being a controller. This could have been a better compliment to Crystal Chronicles in that at least they could add more buttons and functionality to it (of course I have no idea how CC plays yet, so take that statement with a grain of salt and maybe some pepper).

I don't, however, feel very intrigued by the possibility that it's just going to be a new system with new games. Someone said they're over-saturating the market with hardware, and s/he might be correct. This is now different because let's say that, instead of being an add-on, it simply turns out to be more of an individual unit with its own games (using its 1 Gbit media) ... so we just have another entrant into the "console" market (in quotes because I'm including portables in this classification). Cannibalizing GBA sales or GCN sales of hardware *and* software.

I will wait and see. But until I see, I can't help but feel dejected.

"Those that would want the OoT-style for the games obviously didn't grow up with the originals..."

Um, nice generalization there.

Link's Adventure is the first game I owned, and Legend of Zelda is the fourth. 1988. And yet I would love to see those games in OoT fashion, just to see what they can do with it. Wind Waker is fine, too. But there's nothing wrong with OoT.

« on: January 16, 2004, 04:27:52 AM »
I've played the demo, so I hope a few grains of salt are taken with this comment, but I've yet to play a satisfactory 3-D Sonic. Now, I'm not like the tards over at Game Informer (no offense to Billy Berghammer; he's the one good thing about that establishment), who slam down against 3D versions of the classics and instantly name anything that's a 2D remake as Game of the Month (Fusion > Prime? eh... I dunno, but opinions differ, so.)

But Sonic to me just doesn't feel as fun or intuitive as it does in 2D. Now I'm regretting selling back my Sonic Advance but I suppose this leaves me room to buy the already-year-old (i think?) Sonic Advance 2.

However unlike Gabe at Penny Arcade, I can see why people would like the 3D Sonics (and no Gabe, their opinion is not just plain wrong). It's just not for me...

I'll try out the full Sonic Heroes some time, hopefully my view will change with extended playtime.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Releases Holiday Sales Figures
« on: January 15, 2004, 03:56:38 AM »
I'm assuming that Kaplan's statements referred to the fiscal year, so the 3.17 million units sold for the year puts them at over halfway to the 6 million mark... however that's 3.17 million units in the U.S. alone, so they're probably even closer to the goal.

That's good and all, and sales definitely make me confident that the system will be supported (i.e. I won't be left dry without games), but I'm reserving judgment from everything until Microsoft posts official numbers. Not that it matters, the absolute numbers are still great, but I know that *public* perception mostly only sees who's #1, #2, and #3, and the details end up not mattering as much as they should.

Btw DarkSyphor, buddy, sober up a l'il, eh?
