Damn; I almost agree- the ending to Grandia II almost brought a tear to my eye...damn Dreamcast...

Anywho, just to disagree, I'm still volleying between Chrono Trigger and Star Ocean I...hard to decide the best RPG between the two.

In many cases, that would make developers like Treasure technically "second party".

Unlikely though; as that developer has worked for Capcom, Take-Two, Atari, and even Viacom in the past.

Nintendo could adapt an online policy like Sonys, which lets third parties take care of the servers and take most of the profits.
Nintendo has ALREADY set up a policy like this; Sonic Team alone reaps profit on official online GameCube titles (PSO I, II, and III).

As for Sonic Team's efforts:

-PSO I and II sold around 400,000 copies (with adapters) by the end of 2003, and is believed to have topped 500,000 before the launch of PSO III.

Now I don't know how many global copies of say, Unreal Championship or NFL Fever have sold in comparison, but I'm pretty sure PSO is close to, or more in userbase.

Definately sales-related; there's no other reason since both of SK's games received critical acclaim from nearly every facet of the press.

They didn't single-handedly destroy the still-active "kiddy image" these mainstream idiots keep babbling about, but then again, they aren't the games-only company with a few billion in the bank...

Damn you to hell, Nintendo...that is, until Paper Mario 2 ships.

What do you mean, "sort of"?  It is an 100% RPG...
I was saying that, between GBA and console versions, the console version of Pokemon have so-far been primarily just a large area to stage your Pokemon, instead of a full-blown adventure like the GameBoy classics.

Colesseum is much more like GBA Pokemon than Stadium 1 or 2, but lacks a little less than the handheld counterpart in terms of depth, IMO.

Sorry for any confusion on this.

To make it easy for the thread starter:

Skies of Arcadia Legends
Evolution: Worlds
Lost Kingdoms (AKA Rune)
Lost Kingdoms II
Baulder's Gate: Dark Alliance (can be found in most offbeat stores for a mere $8)
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
Animal CRACK-er, Crossing
Future Tactics: The Uprising
Medabots Infinity
Gladius
MegaMan X: Command Mission
Summoner: A Goddess Reborn (pretty damn good PS2 port, plus extras)
XMen Legends (not sure if this has been cancelled or not)
Yu Gi Oh!! ( I won't bother with the subtitle, simply because I hate this franchise)
Tales of Symphonia (due out in a few months)
Baten Katos (also due out in a few months)
Phantasy Star Online: Episodes I and II
Phantasy Star Online: Episode III C.A.R.D. Revolution
Pokemon Colesseum (well, it's sort of an RPG since it has more elements from the main GBA series)

Bascially pick through this selection here, read up on them, and pick up/rent whatever seems more attractive to you.  And because you said you like hack-n-slash action such as Diablo, Hunter: The Reckoning isn't half-bad, though not quite an RPG.

Also, keep an eye out for any new GCN offerings from Square/Enix, as I'm SURE another FF and/or DragonQuest will make their way in due time.

Although I've heard the opposite I'm quite confident the GC can do pixel shaders (up to PS1.4), as the water in Super Mario Sunshine seems to use refraction shaders (looks a lot like the corresponding benchmark in 3DMark 2001). The XBox has slightly more RAM, which could equal more texture detail. Still not enough for the likes of UT2003, though.

Umm... ???  ATi didn't dev. the GCN hardware, it was ArtX who got cornered by ATi and bought out.  Dude, the R200 is probably not on the GCN hardware and if u didn't know, GCN prob. doesn't use OGL either and Microsoft would use DirectX8.1 on the XBox not OpenGL bc Microsoft wants more money for their DX8.1 API which is widely avalible comparing to DX9
Both GCN and Xbox readily have DX8 AND OpenGL sdk's, and they are primarily used during third-party frontends for importing dynamic models and such.

GCN's DirectX8 support stems from its Codewarrior ISA and several programmable features herein, and OpenGL 1.1 and later can directly manipulate the Xbox programmble T&L units.

Nintendo.com.  Raven Shield has been slated for all three consoles since the launch of Xbox and GCN 2 years ago.  Nothing's changed...

As for this whole concept, it's really the fact that sadly, most Nintendo hardcore fans, anti-Nintendo fanboys, and the "mainstream" audience have no clue that GameCube DOES HAVE Mature games- quite a few in fact (only 8 or so less than Xbox).

PS2 is the console with the most M-rated titles (well over 100+), and in that light, both Xbox AND GCN are "kiddy" having only 30+ a piece.

Just look around your local stores...Soul Reaver 2...Hitman 2...True Crime...Dead to Rights...Ghost Recon...RoadKill...Hunter: The Reckoning...you've probably also noticed that in-stores, M-rated GameCube games are damn-near hidden (even Resident Evil titles), PS2 and Xbox versions of the same game are the first thing you see on the wall.

Is this a blatant act of fanboyism?  Maybe, but I think moreso it's Nintendo's lack of promoting M-rated gems like Eternal Darkness, and making sure they're placed well within the store to gain attention.  I shouldn't have to dig under 50 copies of Olsen Twins or Kirby Air Rid games just to find titles like Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, where it's right in the middle of the PS2 and Xbox sections.

Check your local EB or GameStop and see if they don't follow the same trend...I've seen this in multiple states (even Hawaii), and even in Nintendo's larger chains such as Walmart, Target, and Toys'R us.  Nintendo needs either a street team, or more store visits from Nintendo reps.

But then again, it could just be me...

*P.S. mouse_clicker, I thought about posting this at the OTHER site, but I think there's enough "Debatable" concepts going on over there right now...*

The former should have been replaced with pressing back/nothing and the latter with the shoulder buttons controlling sidesteps. It's really annoying when you want to dodge and your character ducks because you didn't release guard fast enough.
Um, you CAN setup autoguard in all Soul Edge console games (which is the same as the Tekken "press back or neutral guard" setup).  Just hit start, go to options, and it's right there...

As for the controls, I prefer the default Dreamcast setup or Arcade, so the closest was DC for GCN, and works beautifully:

A button= Guard
B button= A
Y button= B
X button= K
L trigger= Guard
R trigger= Guard

And you can use the C-stick for your choice of button combos (A+B, A+K, B+K, A+B+K and C-up, C-left, C-right, and C-down respectively).  The only problem is (like any console version) you'll HAVE TO reach from guard to another button together to grab.  B and A are easiest to press natively, while Y and X are hardest to combine with A.  But this is why L and R are guard, also.

And to stay on-topic, SCII GCN is the best version, IMO.  720p and Spawn isn't enough to save it from almost sterile graphics (too clean).

yup, that's the official abbreviation from Nintendo's corporate site.

Either GCN for short, or Nintendo GAMECUBE.

Nintendo must always be written before "GAMECUBE", and GAMECUBE must always be in all caps.

Also the GCN logo can only be shown with the "Nintendo GAMECUBE" moniker at the bottom, else you could be sued.

Interesting, eh?

Both Soccer Slam and Godzilla had "Only for" logos, but only with limited quantities (once the publisher realized the mistake, they were recalled apparently).

I own a Soccer Slam with the "Only for" logo, and I've seen several Godzilla's with the "Only for" immediately after release, but of course none now.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:METROID PRIME 2
« on: December 30, 2003, 05:43:40 AM »
Out of sheer curiosity, isn't Metroid Prime basically Metroid 1.5 as far as the storyline evolves?

If I'm correct, the only logical step for a game dubbed Metroid Prime 2 would be some kind of alternate story for Metroid 2: The Return of Samus, where phazon was somehow leaked onto SR-388.

Hell, that's what the next GBA game essentially is for Metroid 1, so I clearly see how the same could account for the console version.

Halo looked very comparable and in my opinion Metroid Prime looked better. Ninja Gaiden certainly looks great, but I think Halo 2 looks better, and that's using less polygons. Like I said, though, Resident Evil 4 is just leagues ahead of everything else- it looks much better than REmake or RE:0, in my opinion, and it's all realtime.
Super-ditto.

And to KitanaBladeX, PS2 cannot push more polys than GCN, as it's theoretical peak is 66 million polys per second with no light and gouraud shading.  GCN's LSI is capable of 90 million polys per second with 1 light and gourald.

Plus, Ratchet and Clank MAY surpass 10 million polys/sec, while a GCN game surpassed this AT LAUNCH- often at 60 frames per second, to-boot.

Let's just put it this way:  PS2 and GCN/Xbox are leagues apart- if not for the major inclusion of a GPU in the newer consoles as opposed to Sony, along with many other effects (hardware multitexturing/lighting/shadowing/etc).

It's kind of hard to say a non-T&L graphics engine melded into a CPU is in any way superior to a true GPU with loosely fixed and programmable T&L engines.

The PS2 does have the best realworld fillrate, but what's 1Gtexel/sec if you're only running the core at RISC 297mhz and downright laughable texture-read bandwidth?

In my own way, I kinda wish PS2 had flopped, so developers wouldn't be wasting more time fighting the damn thing with code, and instead produce more quality games on Xbox/GCN.

Just think...how many titles could Capcom have completed in the time it took to complete Onimusha, or Square with FFX?

I heard different from various sources.
GameCube production began at the start of October

GameCube price drop effective 9/25/03

So while it wasn't the two months I mentioned earlier (this is dealing with Japan), it's still painfully obvious that Nintendo wasn't able to forsee GCN production picking up in a mere FIVE DAYS (as a matter of fact, Nintendo still stated "later in the fall" as a to when the production would pick up in the $99 press-release).

As I said, GCN's were selling of their OWN ACCORD, rather than leaning on a price drop the entirety of the "overstock" days.

Nintendo RESTARTED GCN production some TWO MONTHS before a price drop was announced- so obviously Nintendo "cleared inventory" well before then (think July/August).

So not only did they "clear inventory" WITHOUT the price drop, they are also selling MORE GCN's directly from retailers- four times more.

And to think, even at $99, NCL STILL MAKES A PROFIT on every console sold.  Now where does that leave Microsoft?  I can tell you:

-There is a profit LOSS on every console purchased
-The console is 3rd in sales globally
-Software sales are last from 1st parties
-XboxLive only accounts for 500k+ of some 9.4 million Xbox owners

What Xbox game outsold GTA:VC in the number of preorders sold (a Guinness Book Record previously held by an earlier Zelda- Ocarina of Time)?  What Xbox game topped 500k in TWO weeks like Mario Kart in the US (and already has 1 million globally)?  Why have only 4 Xbox games sold over a million copies worldwide?

Damn Nintendo's troubles; "The power of "X"" got some serious issues.  Keep in mind that while this is a Microsoft product, it runs off of Microsoft Games Studios' budget, and not Bill Gates' or Microsoft Windows'.

Sorry for ranting, but the "downward spiral" of BOTH consoles need to be seen on BOTH sides.

Athlon 64 just came out a few months back right?  You know what's so special about it?  It's 64 bit.  The problem is that the only OS that is made for a native 64 bit CPU right now is Linux, so Microsoft is scurrying like a swarm of cockroaches to prepare a 64 bit version of Windows XP.

Now.  The Xbox uses a variant of a 733MHz Celeron processor.  If it was 256 bit, why would the Athlon 64 be such a big deal?
I believe this guy is talking about the Xbox GPU being 256-bit, in which he's slightly correct- both the GCN and Xbox graphics engines are 256-bit, but the actual GPU's themselves are 128-bit cores.

So, 128-bit graphics, 32-bit/64-bit console...confusing, no?

Ya know, the ironic part of all this is the fact that PS2 is the only true 128-bit console, while GCN and Xbox are 32/64 and 32-bit respectively (GCN is a 32/64-bit hybrid; 64-bit architecture and 32-bit address space, unless Nintendo did indeed modify PPC 750cxe).

One would think with the SNES vs Genesis mentality that PS2 was the most powerful console graphically...how weird technology has become...
